Default will i get away with a 215/40/17 tyre on my mk5 esco

as above just wondered searched the net and they only say 205/45/17, but one fitment guide said 215/40/18 so if i can squeeze it on under on a 18" rim i must be able to fit it under on a 17" rim, i'm only dropped 35mm so clearence shouldn't be too much a problem
cheer's for any help in advance
