My old man use to paint for BMW and he reckons there nothing but trouble, he's always advised me not to bother with them.

 

any other companies that do a good job?

 

All Ive seen from the same style of repair is crap. They just blob it in....I can do that myself Its even worse when Ive seen them do bigger repairs such as bumper corner's...makes a car look tidier when sat on the pitch but the quality of the repair soon fades away. I managed to repair a chip on my cossie, it was right on top of the nsf wing, happened shortly after being painted. I kept touching it in to build it up, then wet flatted it and re-mopped it....its was 99% (Im noted for being picky apparently lol) invisible but it took a fair few hours to acheive, something that the likes of chips away in my experience are not willing to do.

 

It really depends on the person that does the work and how much pride they have in their work (or how much time they have). You'll get some of them do a good job, and some do a bad job, so unless you can get a good recommendation, then i wouldnt take the risk. Id take it to a good bodyshop and see what they can do with it as they'll be able to do more than what a man in a van can do.

 

my mate at work had his polo gti done during work and it was worse after he had finished than when he started

 

Bodyshops spend thousands on spray booths for a reason, trying to blow some paint about in the corner of the car park is only going to end badly IMO.

 

My mate has a Chips away franchise & he's work is awesome!

I had real bad scrapes on the front & rear bumpers of my Evo (Red TME) & he got them sorted 100% - no one & I mean no one could tell the bumpers had been repaired & blown in

I think it's all down to how good the Chips away dude is, if he's rubbish then he's works going to be rubbish too.

 

I bet if you looked at the bumper a couple of years down the line it would have faded differently to the rest of the paint and give it away.

While I agree with you that the initial results are down to the individual guy doing its talents I also agree with the posts above that its basically just a quick and cheap way to tart up a car to flog it and is best regarded as temporary, especially on a red car, lol

 

Well, I didn't sell the car until about a year & a half after he'd done the work to it & it was still mint, it certainly didn't look like a different shade of Red so again I think it's down to how good the chap's work is

 

I meant a couple of years in the sun, and I bet your car was garaged.
If not then fair play to him, even bodyshops cant manage what he did from what ive seen.

 

I once used them when I had the golf.... for some reason the local car washers managed to blast a chunk of paint off mi side skirt on the Golf Anni..... couldn't tell when the guy had done it.

I think it must depend on how good the operative is..

 

We had two at my old work, and both were shocking, I worked on many cars and the majority had blobs and marks still left on them

The one who did my Fiesta Zetec S left several blobs and marks on it, which I told him to get rid of straight away, which he reluctantly did. Further more, He decided racing my recently purchased car around the compund was a good idea....Managing director didnt take it well, and me especially not, he got the sack.

Thats my experience though, as said it will be down to the guy doing it, prefferably someone with a sense of passion for his work.

 

Our sales pitch (Im not saying which Vauxhall dealership as it'll get me in bother ) is full of botched up 'smart' repairs

 

have been to the chips away demo day and taked to 'real operators in the field rather than the presented ones.you get a protected territory but problem is lines are blurred.Its a good system but results are only as good as the operator.same as any job really , builders/elecs/plumbers....
i couldnt tell where repairs was after they ran a brick over the wing of a new golf.slow repairs tho therby reducing hourly/profit ratio

lookin at the competitors next monday in the midlands and will decide then.real open market for this in Ireland as their aint a lot of operators and people are not buying new cars so tryin to keep current cars tidy.this one looks more up to date as chips away havnt changed a whole lot in 15 years

 

Not recommended.

 

I used them for my wheels and they looked mint till a few wash's later and the paint started to flake also a friend had a side panel done but you could see primer coming through at the edges. As with anything if your not happy with the work get them to do it again or don’t pay.
