as youve been there so long you might be into the week and a half or 2 weeks per year.
whats plant closure money? something extra on top of redundancy?

you get extra foe a full plant shut down of the goverment but dont quote me on this the reason they mothball is so all the land they have doesnt be have to put back to how it was ie grassland.another money saving scheme.and my pension gets frozen been putting 80 pound a month away for 19 years wont get it till 65 now if we shut.

isnt statutory redundancy upto Ł350 per week per year of service? it used to be unless theyre offering you enhanced payments?

your not the only one mate, i work in the plant that supplies corus with all the pieces and crucibles for there steel works, as soon as they heard the news yesterday the management came out and switched all the machines off. The corus plants getting mothballed cos they want to try and open it agian in a few years and it would cost too much to close it. To be honest i knew this was coming.

i'm ok as im a maintenance enginner in the plant but a few operator's got paid off

we get a weeks wage for evrey year ive been there, when we had a briefing tho i work at the coke ovens supposedly your cannot turn one of once its been lit, otherwise it falls to bits as it cools down, they are going to idle the blastfurnace which means keep it warm but with no iron in it,with have 2 batteries one is going to be idled which will keep the other one warm ,it has happened twice before they never recovered.

Aye ... I worked at Corus for a few year ... Contactor for Multi-serve, Bran-Sand's and Tee's port ....Big body blow for the area that they are gonna shut the furnace down ... Once the Furnace is shut off it takes alot of ŁŁŁ to restart the thing ... Good old boy told me they would run till it broke .. Projected the last 5 year of the contract.

The chemical Industry is on the decline as well.

Hope ya get sorted mate ... I have load's of good memorys of the place and enjoyed working within Redcar works ...

Proper shit news this. It's probably gonna have a knock-on effect on our plant. Especially with Invista Nylon shutting down and PTA at Wilton being on an extended shutdown. Doing my offshore survival next week but not too sure if that will be of much use.

Mulla, which coke ovens do you work at because if the SBCO shuts we'll be affected but heard rumours that will stay open cos there is a demand for coke.

Its bad news I worked in there myself a few years back as a contractor and they went through a tuff period then when they talked about closing it. It will be bad news for the area in general as it will no doubt kill off all the local suppliers etc.

Its worth trying offshore but things have slowed right down in the north sea aswell, I have a few mates working both offshore and onshore in aberdeen and they are all saying there has been cutbacks on recruitment.

I hope you get sorted out with something else soon.

Not good news at all mate! i work offshore and tbh i wouldnt go away and waste money on an rgit at this point in time cos like people have said its a bad time to try and get offshore as people are thinking of paying off and have done already so i reckon it would be very hard to try and get a start but good luck anyway hope things work out for you mate this country is slowly falling apart

I was made redundant the week before Christmas , had to mothball my FRST but now found another job ..... better pay and less hours ..... remember keep your head up and something will come along , I know it seems shit at the moment but if you let em grind you down then it makes the whole situation worse.

thanks beef good job i have payed for the car only a few daft bits to get,i just need the italians to come back and sighn the deal at work, were all hoping they are trying to get it cheaper now, whos going to pay the full price of a buisness in this recession, once they idle the blast furnace which means keep it empty, quite a few plants will be mothballed but the buisness will be alot cheaper to buy as hardly any workforce,

hi mate shit news for you but youll here loads of rumours in that place most of it crap im affraid i worked in corus in newport for more than 10 years and glad i got out around 4 years ago to be honest still got loads of really good friends there and even my dad is still there going through what you are now. but im really sorry to say this but the 400 million to put the land back right is utter bollocks as they demolished our coke ovens when i was there around 6 years ago and that land was supposed to cost a fortune to put right but its been done and the cost was only around a quarter of that even less to be quite frank as it cost around 100 million to completely level our coke ovens, sinter plant,2 blast funaces and our concast and return the land to what they deemed fit i.e houses and a new school has been earmarked for that land now! not that i believe its clean land again i just think they paid somebody a big enough backhander to declare the land safe again. Sorry to be so depressive mate id just prefer the truth instead of all the bull that goes round im affraid thats why i guess i had enough and left, and lucky now for me that i did although do really miss the crack that we had there, ive got a better job now although i dont think ill ever have a job with the mates and fun that i had there and that is priceless memories now im afraid and i dont think il ever find it again now that there shutting all the steel works down just like they did the mines BASTARD GOVERMENT!

i know the thought on going on the sick mate was exactly like that down with us but as part of the redundacy payment we got an offer of an extra Ł2000 not to go sick so maybe youll get that also? but it was a three strikes and out case i.e if you break their rules once they deducted X amout from the 2K and so on until youve got nothing! although i will say this most people did get the full Ł2000 if thats any consolation mate!

if you read the local gazette the italians still say they are buying the company, the works manager says he has heard nothing yet,and the deal is still on the table .who knows they just keep messing with peoples lives.since ive started this thread it just shows how many people are having the knock on effect from this
