On a 2wd saph is the thermostat held in with i spring clip as there is a groove inside the housing,or does it just sit there?

hi mate
yes there is a groove which the spring sits in. just use a screwdriver and carefully lever the old one out. they can be a little stubborn if its been in there for a while.
If you take your time and not damage it you should be able to reuse
