Default How hard to drill through a turbo exhaust housing?

after thinking about putting my EGT in the downpipe it will just be better to put it in the husing and tapping it were the manifold goes on like Porkies old 3door.

how hard is the material compared to a stainless exhaust for instance?
im using a hand drill not a pillar!

a good quality drill bit will do it no problem but use a pilot bit first then tap with a 1/8th npt tap.

Should be a lot easier than stainless! But then again, it's considerably thicker!

Use cobalt drill bits, like a hot knife through butter then.

100% agree there....had to drill out my turbo housing holes and normal bits wouldn't touch it, those cobalt bits are magic!

I've heard that can actually tend to harden it rather than help as cutting fluid - get the proper cutting fluid & it will help no end!!

it helps to keep the drill bit cool, as when they get hot they blunt quickly

i had to drill a housing once, and the cobolt drill took 2 hours to go through. took it to an engineering shop and they said it had become hardened due to the heat.

I have cobalt and machine drills, slow speed is the key, due to heat build up, but I use correct cutting fluid too.
