Default made redundant, opinions please

basically i have just been made redundant as a mechanic at a ford main dealer, i cant find any jobs in my area at the moment and was thinking of trading my mazda in for a transit and setting up on my own doing mobile mechanics, i have got most of the tools needed including a ecu diagnostics machine, but dont know weather it is the right time to try and start up.

so just opinions on this please!

sorry to hear that mate, it's a bitch... I work for JLR and am waiting, the axe is getting lower!

if you have the basics to get going and don't need any extra funds, loans etc... I'd go for it, not got much to lose, if you have a few contacts from the garage, while not entierly ethical you could always try and tempt a few punters away, especially if you can undercut the main dealer. everyone is feeling the crunch, i know my mondy is off the road till i get a chance to work on it cos can't afford garage repairs.

Whatever happens best of luck, sure you will find lots of support... and some abuse as well, ying and yang and all that!

Sounds like a plan, I would rather get some one to service my car at work than have to drop it of at the garage.

I have a mobile mechanic come out to our cars, its all the insurances and public liability that you will have to have etc, being self employed and the likes.

My mechanic says its swings and roundabouts a lot of the time, some weeks he can't move for bookings and then others he has no work at all.

I think it's a great idea. I would suggest that you try to specialise. I have a contact who runs a BMW mobile mechanic business. Started with one van, now has about eight and employs 20 people or so. He tells me that his business is largely unaffected by the economic climate.

Good luck. Go for it! Make sure you have discipline, strong customer service, good communication, honesty and trust and you will go far!
