Standard Cossie Breather System
Hi everyone, looking for a bit of advice...
Have got a RamAir cone filter on my 2wd Saph, and I was wondering where the oil breather pipe should go now that it doesn't go back into the airbox.
I have left the full extent of the breather pipe (the one that goes over to the airbox) on the car, with a bit of pipe on the end routed under the car....
This doesn't seem to be the right thing to do in my mind, does any body have any advice on what to do with this pipe?
I know fitting a breather kit (Bailey etc) would sort it, but I haven't got the cash right now, just need to sort it for the time being...
Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Rich

You could route it into a pop bottle as a catch pot. Rather crude but would contain some of the oil vapor coming through the breather.
Can't father xmas bring you a breather kit

In a ideal world of bhp it needs keeping out of the engine, but if not running mental bhp next to nothing oil wise is going to come out unless engine is worn out.
If you go on RATSPORT.CO.UK you can buy a generic breather for around £50, there is nothing special about a bailey breather(apart from the grossly inflated price) so any sort like this will do, or a diy one.

Hi All
When i brought my saff, it had a breather filter poking out by the fuel rail.
After a couple of weeks, oil started to come out of the filter and covered the eninge bay
i took it to my local garage to have some other work done on it and they connected up a coke bottle to see how much oil came out. if only a bit came out they suggested a breather catch tank tank could be fitted and if it filled up then a deeper look into the engine might be needed.
So a couple of weeks have passed and the bottle is about 1/6 filled and i am looking to it a breather catch tank.
So my quetsion is what kind of setup should i go for?

All thats been done to mine is where the breather pipe comes out near the side of the cam cover,it has been cut off and a little filter put on the end.It was like that when i bought the car.Mine is about 300bhp and mine seems to be ok.
You don't need to get another cam cover, just drill your own and fit an appropriate kit as per instructions. When you take the cam cover off it becomes obvious where the hole/breather should be located.
Alternatively don't have the second breather from the cam cover at all but from the blanking plug on the block (exhaust side of the engine), where normally you would fit the oil return pipe from the separator tank. Then get some fittings and have the oil return pipe returning to the sump plug location.
This is a better setup anyway returning oil below sump oil level and breathing directly from the block either side, as recommended by GGR and similar to the setup used on their RS500 touring cars.

Hi Dave
I did mean put a hole in the existing cover, i guess i should proof read my comments next time, mind you if i did that then my dexlexia whould not be that bad.
Anyhow, Do you know of any how to guides or inttrauction on the internet or that you could send me about the best praticses/ fitting?

The only time oil should be returned to the sump is BELOW oil level, otherwise it just pressurises the return line as well.
The reason for the amal return to airbox is most likely ford used a valve that was a std fit on something else that had this, and rather than leaving it to atmosphere routed it the same way, so that it did not look bad in the eyes of customers.
