being a "good bloke" means shit these days. If your industry has too many employees and too little work then its inevitable. I think the key is having a good base of skills so your not stuck in one small sector. Theres a lot of people my way made redundant whove only done one thing all thier working life and now redundant dont have any transferable skills.

Also ageism is still alive and well regardless of what the law says. Over 50 and your fucked unless you really stand out for some reason.

Thats the one thing i dont get is all these sparky training courses claiming they placing hundreds into work every month sounds like they telling a few porkys to me

Hopefully im on my SIA course soon which will broaden my employability.

been under the "pressure" twice

both times it was because the company wanted to downscale the operation but still needed to give us a job at the end if there was one available

first time round, got the boot as the company was taken over, only to be told, you can still have a job if you do 7 hours more a week for less money
after 3 months, those who hadn't taken their redundnacy were effectivly sacked as they made our working conditions a bit too shit really

second time around they were volentary again, but everyone got the letters and there were enough who took up the offer to make compulsory one avoidable

it may seem a lot of money at the time, but unless you can walk into another job virtualy straight away, it's a big risk to just take the money and run, one of the guys who was with us was last seen sweeping the streets and another is unemployed, and another has gone back to luthisania

Im not that interested in doing loads of door work. security guarding suits me fine

Thing is sitting in a shed might be shit but its good money compared to most minimum wage retail shite round here. Im not paying for the SIA so id be a fool not to take it up.

so hes doing nothing and gets paid surely they would have recruits queing rounf the block for a job with no work in it

Most of the fucktards round here could still amuse themselves all day in a shed

i was made redundant back in january but wasn't too bothered as i got a reasonable payout. i had 7 months off, and started work again in august, luckily just before the news headlines got really bad

Found out today from one of my former work colleagues that the company i left in April this year (when i quit) has just given 50% of its staff compulsary redundancy notices & a further 25% of the workforce there have been offered voluntary redundancy - just in time for christmas & the new year

If only i'd stayed & put up with 6 months of general crap & shit as after the number of years i'd worked for them i'd have just gotten a very nice & very large redundancy payout by the sounds of it

Yes !!

Once in 1983, the whole company was sold to the Yanks & they closed it down. Was out of work for 3 weeks before getting another job, asked for 3 weeks Holiday before I started work again & got it.

Im sure its a lot harder now not the jobs to go to.
So glad I made retirement on my terms lets hope the good times return.

No problems with job cuts up here, but were always the last to be affected as it's a poor area compared to rest of England when it comes to the price of living.

back in the early 90's i took 9k to walk out there and then plus a months pay on top as we did not need to work the notice. i went straight in to another job the following monday. some of the blokes where 6 mths out of work but they were lacking in skills so it all depends on your skill set i supose. i feal for anyone in this situation as we had 9 blokes caned last month due to the drop in the dolla as all the cars we convert are from the USA and it went from 98c to the au dolla to 65c so put all the cars up by 30%
