4x4 must have a driveshaft or something else to hold the wheel bearing together.

it is different mate but easiest way to tell is the back of the hub and the front

if it has a big nut in the middle its 4x4 if it looks like a nut but is around 3" across and nothing in the middle its 2wd

On a 2wd the big nut holding the hub faces on, is on the inside face of the hub, and ona 4x4 its on the outer side.

To convert a 4x4 to 2wd people just take the shaft out of the outer cv and leave its body in place to hold the hub together

the 4x4 one has a nut holding the shaft in it even if its dummied the 2wd has nothing in the middle and looks like an internal type nut sort of like you would use the worlds biggest allen key to undo it

only with a nut in the middle if it's on a car.

The easy way is hole size for the strut is larger on 4wd, and the area of the hub at the base of the strut is solid on 4wd whereas it is sculpted away on 2wd, as you look with disc facing flat at you.

Am I missing a trick? the calipers are a dead giveaway too...IIRC 4x4 calipers wont fit a 2wd hub and vice versa.

Cheers

2wd calipers can be used with xr4x4 hubs so not always a dead giveaway
also the hubs are differant where the ball joint goes in
4x4 have a pinch bolt, 2wd has nut on top of ball joint i'm sure

if you have no innards to look at:
the 2wd hubs have an M12 thread in the caliper holes
the 4wd ones don't and only take M10 bolts
