Check voltage on starter, it could be the fuse boks, or the ignition rele

loads of clicks is more than likely still low battery, the battery might be now dud = evenwith a boost charger on ot - a dud battery will pull the booster right down on voltage.

when you turn the ignition to position II (red lights but not cranking) do you hear the fuel pump prime for a few seconds and the idle valve click for about the same time?

Dave - yes pump primes and do hear a click - not sure what - will double check the idle valve tho.... next?
cleaned with dremmel all contacts and earths in battery bay back to shiny surface so thats eliminated now - fuel getting in as plugs are wet. and plugs have spark........

Is the immobiliser light on the clock do anything when you try and start it? Is it a small or large turbo? Are you running WIPAC or PATS?

Have you checked the wiring for the CPS?

right then -got it started but lots of white smoke !!! plugs are black and wet - running very rich with lots of juice.... maybe the idle control valve or is it the temp sensor in the plenum ???? any thoughts ...

Mark N - no immob on it as no red light in dash.. ecu changed at some point and also loom in the engine bay , as its running 803s 3bar map etc

if its very rich and you are getting fuel carry over down the exhasut pipe - id now say map sensor. i had a wierd one with a duff 3 bar, measured the right voltage and eveb read right on a pectel monitor - changed it as msd and hey presto - working ok .

Dave-

Did a compression test and seems fine thankfully.

Ok - still the same - nearly melted the starter as cranking so much it got very hot so have left it for now although might have knackered it. - what about oil and fuel mixing...

lots of smoke when it does eventually catch - overfuelling though - and runs rough and only just idles.. better when mid revs. plugs wet and black ....

crank sensor, water temp sensor, and map sensor then as you said earlier... ?

i'd try swapping the map sensor with a known good one first- - mine incidentley had been stoof for 6 months with the 3 bar fitted when it ran rich at tickover but cleared as you reved it. a brand new one is now only 50 quid. the other one to watch is for an air leak from teh inlet manifold to the map sensor - as if it has one ( ie the pipe has come off or is loose) the map sensor will rear nearer atmospheric pressure rather than vacuum as at idle, this will result in the ecu thining the car is under load and will fuel accordingly = ie rich.

Default escos will start !!( at last )

yippee !! its alive ..... well almost. trying to start it previously I melted the starter, so new starter new altanator with the new battery and all sensors onnected ( the blue temp sensor wasnt connected ) and it wanted to start almost instantly. whes starts now but still is missing and backfires under high revs. I have ordered a sensor kit with all the diff sensors etc in so which would you change first.. also struggles to idle and then dies..?

feel better now that I have heard it. when its mid revs it whistles lovely.

also my rev clock needle has stuck right round and stayed there when I was trying to start it before ? how can I sort that out. ?

try thumping the top of the dash - .

with the blue ect sensor disconnected the ecu will run the car as if its very cold - so when hot will overfuel and cough splutter and even stall - which you have seen it do.

the ect sensors are only 15 quid.

Thanks for your imput Dave - appreciate it... will try the dash thump!!

matt lewis sensor kit turned up today, so replacing them all also cleaned idle valve as it was struggling - its like a different car -!! idles now and freely revs without backfire.. better every time I start it ! gonna drain the oil one more time to rid it of any fuel..
