Don't know if its a repost but if you haven't seen the vids and pics then take a look. Reading through the corner byt corner description is amazing...
Chris Harris is an amazing car journo and proper driver as well.
he took a standard GTR and standard GT2 to the ring to try and end the internet debates going on and war of words between Porsche and Nissan... (Porsche called Nissan liars and cheats regarding the Ring Time of the GTR)
Check it out

Dont know what else to say apart from
Fantastic article!
Very interesting reading too!
I love both cars, and I would personally agree with the jist of what he says at the end, where he's unsure of whether the GTR can make its claimed lap time, but thats based on my opinion, rather than fact. I can imagine the GTR is an awesome car, but I cant see it being that much quicker than the GT2, if at all.
Both still incredible cars, and I'd love to own either of them

Both cars are awesome, but it would appear that the time the nissan GTR set (when it claimed the "record")may have been assisted in some way (more power maybe???)
Interesting article Lee - looks to be written in very much the same manner as EVO magazine (even mentiones Jethro and co). Are the two linked?

Agree, the weight of the GTR is ludicrous really. I know the use of exoyic materials will increase the price but 1700kg+ for a sports car is wrong. Long term they are going to have to be lightweight if they want to meet emissions regs.............

Not taking anything away from the Nissan, awesome awesome car

Great link Lee
The Porsche is ofcourse twice the cost of the Nissan so I would expect it to be better but I am suprised about the GTRs lap times, Nissan must of tweeked it one way or the other

The GT2 was 15odd seconds slower than the car is capable of in better conditions.
GT2's best lap is by Porsche test driver who can push the car to the limit, cos if he crashes it, big deal.
Likewise with the GTR's alleged best lap, driven by expert GTR driver who has been told to drive it one click down from crashing it.
Chris Harris drives a race car 997 at the ring and is driving a borrowed GTR that he didn't really want to spank...
I found it a very interesting read, but didn't conclude "Nissan
" out of it
I think DR is the same freelance journos that Evo employ. Its a site thats a damn site better than www.evo.co.uk thats for sure.
As for GTR v GT2. I think DRs test is as close as your going to get. Porsche have the most to lose in terms of image, and given they themselves aren't immune from being less than honest with statistics in the past. I find it odd they would even officially have a dig at Nissan.

here's my one niggle with the tyres thing.
even if nissan were'nt using their regular production tyres and were using trackday type rubber, it's still what the porsches run anyway so theyre not at an advantage as such.
it's like comparing my car to a BTCC car and the BTCC driver complaining i put slicks on as my car didnt come with them from the factory

If I had 131thou free for a car I would NOT be buying a GTR and pocketing the rest, I would sit my arse in a PORSCHE!!
However if I only had 60k spare I would be driving my (butt ugly)GTR telling people, "Yeah it's almost as quick as a GT2".....(that's actually a hypothetical scenario as I would NEVER pay that to sit in a Nissan no matter how good it is, I would rather a 2nd hand Porsche
Really they are in no way in competition other than all the media hype, but the GT2 has just pissed on that anyway hahahaha
The only thing I would say is that it annoys me that they just say that the GTR is quicker on it's more track orientated tyres, but rather than getting a car thus equipped (like the Porsche is), they just acknowledge this, but still run the slower tyres
.
If they REALLY want to settle the arguement once and for all (as Porsche claim the car MUST be tampered with, where Nissan claim that Porsche should just learn how to drive a GTR
), they should put the CORRECT tyres on one, get the Porsche driver to see what he can do with it on a lap, and then get the Nissan test driver to do a lap. If there is no significant disparity between the times (and it doesn't get down to near the quoted Nissan figures), then the time has been fudged. If the Nissan test driver can get to within 5-6s of the original time (as Chris Harris mentioned, the track times can vary from month to month), then you know it is sour grapes from Porsche - job jobbed

It's all well and good getting immersed in a well written and expertly crafted article, but hanging off the words as if they are gospel is not such a good idea.
A good journalist never lets facts get in the way of a good story!
I personally would not have a 996 or 997 turbo, as they are NOT the car you think they are. They are WAY too soft and not really suitable for any kind of track work as standard.
However, if it was the choice between a brand new GTR or a second hand 997 GT3, it would be the Porsche everytime. It might mot be quite as fast, but it has much more depth of character and doesn't do everything for you in the same way the GTR does.
