I just use the std cup nut with a flat washer, but don't have the rubber bung that goes in the cup, later ones have a all metal nut that is domed.

I see, sounds to me that a regular nut/washer is a bit risky? allthough its been fine since engine rebuild a year ago,..

A regular nut and washer is fine, the only reason why the rounded nut head exists is to stop it gouging the inside of the cam belt cover which rests on it when fitted.
The regular nut whether the type that is all metal or half metal, half rubber is not locking anyway.
