Default anyone explain a Magic Memory Stick for a slim psp ? anyone know about firmware etc ?

im new to all this jargon and its gone way over my head .

ive worked out you need a pandoras battery etc - ive got a service tool battery off amazon now .

and then i need a magic memory stick ?? ive read loas of topics about these and how to make them but im still none the wiser .

then theres all this talk of downgrading to the 1.5v to play homebrew etc ? what the hell is homebrew ?

so i understood you had to have 1.5v to get this to work but now im reading how to get 4.05 m33 etc ? one site tells you to go down and now im getting told im going up?? im lost ?

the psp my sons got is a 4.05 and my pc is runnign vista which apparently makes a difference?

then ive read to get the latest 4.05 m33 you need to be running CFW ................ what the hell is going on

if anyone can make head and tail of whats what and where to get a magic stick thing and then how the hell to go down and then up pls PM me .

could some one explain also what firmware i really want to get hold of etc and why ? i know you used to want to have a 1.5 for the obvious reasons but will newer firmwares do the same ? is this why i should be looking for 4.05 m33 ????

and pls pls explain it in simple terms lol

Sorry can't help. But... wondered if I could do this with a Sony camera, so it could accept pro duo cards, or anything bigger than 128mb.

If your're going to 'try' and run homebrew (ie, programs/games that people have written instead of stuff you buy from the shop or playstation network) you do need an older version of the firmware. Much older - Sony prevented homebrew programs from running from version 1.5 onwards I think. Some buggy versions of the firmware allow you do downgrade your firmware, ie, go from 2.0 to 1.5. Generally you can only go 'up'.

Some games that you buy require a certain minimum version of the firmware, which is usually included on the UMD. Personally, I only use my PSP for 'genuine' games, and browsing forums, so homebrew software isn't a problem for me.

The Magic memory stick you're referring to, i guess, is a MagicGate memory stick. There's nothing special about them really. MagicGate is a security feature developed by Sony for the Memory Stick range. If the device (a digital camera for example) supports MagicGate, and is told to use it, the contents of the memory stick become protected, so that any other device cannot read the contents of the stick. The stick is then 'bound' the the device that protected it.

If you want my opinion, gonnect the PSP to the internet, and update the firmware to the latest available version (5.00 I think). The memory stick you need is a Memory Stick Pro Duo - Sandisk or Sony ones are what you need. Take a look at www.mobymemory.com for some good deals and prices. Apart from other features, the latest firmware now supports the Playstation network, so you can download full games and demos direct from Sony.
