My mate (yappstar) rang me today needing a hand lifting and moving some scrap metal and weighing it in... Went and loaded up his van, left and headed off to the scrapyard.
...got there, went onto the weight bridge, unloaded the van, went to claim the money for 260kg of steel, turned out to be a whopping...!!!
Hi the price of scrap has fallen a hell of a lot in the recent few weeks, eg from over £230 per tonne for cars down to about £40 the other week as i was taking to my local to the local scrap yard owner the other day
A yard near me offered me £250 for my Mondeo in July, went back there a week ago and only got offered £80, the owner of the yard says the value of steel has fallen in the last few weeks.
Lucky to get £1500 for a ton of copper now! Prices are that bad the yard I'm at paid off 4 lads this week, and I was one of them
Chinese aren't buying anything at all now so all the scrappies are left with tons of scrap they paid top price for and can't sell to anyone now. Ally went from 80p a kilo to 25p in the last 3 weeks and looks like things will get worse.
Wenny got 14 whole quid for a 306 shell the other day they shut the gates on the local scrap metal mechants near to us last week because they were full.
we got £45 for a saxo the other day, and it was full to the roof with scrap. some yards now have the problem that they have bought all their stuff at peak price, and its now worth fuck all, before they have had time to process it!
all scrap has dropped,as said 3 months ago say a cavilier size car would have been £180 off the floor that is(ie no wheels) now its about £40-50,tat yard i use in brum taronis said steel was at £35 a ton, lowest its been for a loooooong time, there was a lad weighing in a bit of copper and he went back to the cashier 3 times saying ''that must be wrong mate, are your scales broke'' lol,
definatly a good time to invest in scrap if you have the spare space (luckily ive almost 50 acres),it will come back in about 12-18 months as things pick up again, until then i am just stockpiling it,ive got about 12 tonnes sat in my yard now,i reckon on getting at least 100 tonnes in the next 12 months, then hopefully it will be back up over £120 a tonne.
We getting no steel boats in at work at the mo, normally get one/two a month exporting near 60,000 ton's worth, but there havent been any...supposed to be in one next week taking 33,000 ton rebar and thats it till after crimbo!!
leave it sat about, its a great investment left where it is.forget about it for a few years.
thats whats happening with my copper, it will sit in my garage until its worth taking again, the last year i was getting approx £200 a month from stripping cable out at work.
