Default IHI turbochargers

Does anyone have any info on the range of IHI turbos used in Subarus? Inparticular the 300bhp scooby? Flow maps would be really handy..

The chances are none of them, as OEM's usually have custom turbos.

Scoobs use VF23, VF-22, VF-35, VF-34, VF-43, VF-36, VF-37 so which one you're interested in?

Do you mean which one will achieve 300bhp, or which one is used on the cars that make 300bhp as standard (or rather 276bhp)? If the latter, that is the VF34, which is able to do in excess of 350bhp, but does 300ish bhp at 1 bar.

Mike there were ones with 300bhp as standard as well e.g. 2.5litre ones.

If the latter, that is the VF34, which is able to do in excess of 350bhp, but does 300ish bhp at 1 bar.
VF-34 is the standard turbo on early (2002-3003) Spec.C cars without twinscroll manifold/turbo.

was looking to change my td05 on my scoob to an ihi and was advised to stick with the td series as they are said to be more durable. ihi are said to spool a fair bit quicker though.

Many of them have ball-bearing cores which helps the spool-up a lot. I would say that both makes are extremely durable, turbo failure on a Subaru is next to unheard of in my experience. You cannot go wrong with VF-34 I must say, great spool-up, great max power. TD05 is archaic in comparison.

I had two fail on my Elise within a year running at 329 BHP..
the big problem I found was it was over boosting all the time and the wastegate seemingly could not dump the gasses quick enough....
it made 21 psi from about 3,000 rpm onward... no more no less no matter what we tried...
We put that down to there being very little back pressure after the turbo (big exhaust) and having a very short exhaust run...
Sean Bicknell had the same thing too....

If you overspun them then they could fail, but I have experience of VF-35 (similar turbo) lasting several engines on heavily abused Subaru, using ignition cut type launch control with 1 bar of boost when stationary etc. But it surely has smaller 2,7'' exhaust.

Maybe you need ported WG? Or different exhaust housing altogether.

Probably right....we ported the WG but just could not get enough material out...
