how can you find out if diamonds are real?
wifes got a ring given to her by nan about 15 years ago, we found it and a couple others shes been given over the years in her old jewelry box in loft.
not wanting to sell or anything just we looked at it and theres 3 sizable stones, each one is a fair bit bigger than the half carat solitare i bought her anyway lol
dont want the embarisment of taking to a shop to ask, in all fairness dont think would make a difference to her if there were just glass, its just one of those things you keep if you know what i mean, her nans quite well off but its a very old looking ring, just wondered if there was a easy test?

only real way of finding out is by taking it to a pro
they will by able to tell u the clarity, color, cut, and carat Weight. and what its worth
cause if its worth a bit i would say get it insured dont worry about them telling u its worthless just say ur seeing if it needs insuring or not

Diamonds are normally rated VS1 or VS2 and then given a letter for colour A-D (rare) being best, E to G and so on. Even a shop cannot give you an exact grading, but they could tell you if they are real. If you are in London go to either Grays Antique Market and see someone like Micheal Longmore, JLA or Anthea AG.
If not go to a jewellery shop, not the likes of Ernest Jones etc.
I used to work for someone in the trade.

get a eyepiece/maybe even a magnifying glass.
look at the cut on the diamonds, if its smooth and scratchless its real
if its got scratches n imperfections like dents etc its not
although just take it to a jewelrry shop and they will confirm it for sure
