just watched btcc 1989 and they say 560 bhp ?
I think its easily do able for those teams with thousands to spend on engine and developement time.
AVA managed it on my engine with a a tiny budget and a shonky rolling road so can see why the big teams couldnt have done it with their eyes closed!

They still have 300bhp and are no slouch by any means

They pretty much changed the rules so the Cosworth couldnt compete. The only things they raced against were other Cosworths anyway. Banned the used of forced induction so that killed off the cossies.

i loved taht race! wish i could find it on vhs or dvd somewhere,to go with the rest i have
thats shit, surely the same technolgy was available to every one, why didnt the germans just get funky with the turbos
BMW would have had to produce 500 road cars,The germans made the mistake of being arrogant and thought their mighty german engineering would waste a poxy english ford they made that mistake in 1939-1945 too
.The Dick Johnson car was reported as having close to 600bhp in qualifing Spec but many doubted that. Was talking to someone involved at the time who said 570 in qualifing & 540 in race trim was about the true figures involved.
it was dick johnsons car they were on about as well

My mate had the same problem a couple of years back with his F2 stock car, it complied with the rule book, but because it was so good they banned all the parts on his car that made it fast, so had to build a brand new car in order to compete the following year
it is shit because at the time they raced cosworth produced a car that complied with the rules, but because it pissed on everything they banned it.

Yes I agree in was a shitter they got banned
i know of one bttc race team that ran rs500's that reckoned rolling roads are crap and its a dyno they run in and tuned their race engines on.
they used toluene to run massive boost and could afford to rebuild their rs500 engines regularly which is unlike most people on here who can't.

As far as i remember RS500 cossies were the only cars with a turbo so raced each other but the M3's were faster around most of the circuits . Does anyone remember for sure as i was in my 20's then and drinking too much , lol

m3's were faster when rs500's didn't have the grip to beat them imo, in rallycross where groupa a rs500's were very popular you could beat a rs500 with a crappy 16v kadett but not when a rs500 could get the power down
Has anyone got access to the rs500 and M3 lap times at the circuits from back in the day as this would be interesting ? I've tried a quick web search but keep getting a load of other shit popping up
.
The rs500's ran in class A (2.5+ litres because they had a turbo) and the m3's in class B (2 litre - 2.5 litre) .

With regards to engine power apparently Colin Bond's CTX RS500 ran more power than the DJM cars.
Reliability two decades on....that must be something to aspire to, eh?
The rs500's where in class "A" by themselves really , according to the BTCC web site they're was only a handfull of others entered in this class and they consisted of a maserati , supra etc .
Quality stuff in those days for sure and everyone who liked cars was glued to the tv back then , not sure i can say the same about the 2008 touring cars though
