what program should i use to help me build a simple website for a friend? its not going to be anything flash, but ive never done it before

help and advise would be amazing

Really what you could do with is Dreamweaver. www.adobe.com/dreamweaver It'll give you a simple GUI.

Please do not use tables though for building the site so you'll need to have a read up on using CSS & DIVS.

If you need any help just give me a tinkle as it's what I do for a living.

i just used microsoft frontpage for mine www.pinsharpauto.co.uk

if you can edit the html code as well as use the GUI, then it seems plenty good enough for free

Looked into this. There are some free programs on download.com. Also there is some tutorials on how to write HTML code which i found usefull.

i made a simplish one for my dad and used photoshop and dreamweaver, looked pretty good in the end.
used photoshop to do some buttons/logos etc and then dreamweaver for the coding/text
there's loads of photoshop/dreamweaver tutorials and templates too

Notepad and look up CSS/DIVS instead of tables

im not good enough for notepad phil,,, ive never done html

i cant find frontpage or dreamthingy to download anywhere without loads of virus in them

I would say try 'Google Pages' but they've stopped it now.

So.. try 'Google Sites'

you can get a fully free web authoring application called Kompozer

http://www.kompozer.net/

its WYSIWYG so you should be ok ( What You See Is What You Get )

Take a look at my two - I've paid nothing because they use open source free software. You'll need certain pre-requisites to do something similar though...
