Did anyone see a red Volvo 850R saloon on track ? I went out in this the other day & was very impressed, over 300 bhp at the wheels & puts the power down too a mega sorted car with no lag. Didn't get up there myself.

That Volvo handles really well & is a regular visitor to the Ring, people can't believe it as it normally outpaces much more powerful cars.

the volvo was QUICK

the porsches were not

really good standard of track day driving tho, hardly any "heroes" out there holding people up.

only thing that let the day down was the weather, but not much could be done about that

The wet weather was a nightmare, I went out in the TT and after 3 laps I came in convinced something was wrong as was no grip even at 30mph round half the corners. But it was jus the weather.

Highlight of the day by miles was going out in Haydens Evo, seemed to be about the only car the wet weather didnt massivley affect, wet past renton and maria in the TT, and then peevee in the 205 (which was going well considering the weather) on full oppo lock on that one corner, and in the end got black flagged for drifting.

Hayden thought was for the lap he spun doing it while trying to overtake about 5 cars, but it was 3 laps later when they flagged us, so guess they just wasnt happy with the 3rd gear full oppo lock all the way from maggots to the bridge

TBH wasnt at all impressed with the guy in the evo's driving for a track day. overtaking on corners is bad enough normally, but in those conditions it's really risky! it's SO easy to spin out on corners, that you really dont want to spin out and hit a car overtaking you on the outside

Me and renton were in FITS of laughter watching him drift past! HILARIOUS!

Was overtaking only on the outside from what I saw, and thats allowed.

As long as you driving within your capabilities, I dont see the problem. Plenty of people going off at 1/4 the speeds he was doing, Hayden seemed to have less off's than most that day.

no you miss the point. im not talking about him coming off, im talking about the person being overtaken coming off.

overtaking on corners panics novices and makes them make mistakes, but not only that, if they do come off for whatever reason, theyll spin straight into your car and make things very messy.

i never overtake cars on corners even if they have mistakenly slowed down, hugged the inside and indicated. i've seen it before where people have done this only to spin out

in the briefings they said overtaking on the outside is perfectly fine.

good job too as he prob did more overtaking there than anywhere else.

wouldnt be much fun if you couldnt do anything barring overtake on the straights, its enough of a parade lap as it is.

watchin haden literally drift round the outside of me mid corner just highlighted how good 4x4 cars (or evos) really are.. everyone was slipping and sliding off at 20 mph lol

PS: think it firmly puts to bed the rumours that 888s are crap in the wet..

Totally.

And its not 4x4s as such, I reckon its evo's.

Our TT and Phils S3 were both massivley suffering in the wet.
The TT was appaling, could barely go round some corners at 30mph without it trying to leave the track, was boring and slow, you was deffo managing to corner faster in the 205.

stav, im not saying he broke the rules, i know silverstone done always ban overtaking in corners like all otehr UK trackdays do. im just saying that i persnally do not consider it a clever thing to do on a track day nomatter if youre allowed to do it or not.

If i was being overtaken mid-corner and i spun out and hit the car overtaking me, i would not be best pleased, and no doubt they'd end up trying to blame me.

anyway, trackdays arent about racing if you want to race, joina race series!

also the black RX7 had bad ettiquete. wouldnt move out of the way, far slower round the circuit and when it did come to the striaghts wouldnt yeald. proper trackday "hero"

nobody was racing anyone, but its about wanting to go fast and have fun.

people seem to forget its about fun and seem to do trackdays as its the "cool" thing to do.

earlier in the day when the track was properly shit and wet i went out a few times, each time did about 3 laps before i was bored out of my mind with the speed of things and came back in, absolutley no fun in the slightest.

and wet or dry, if i was in a fast car and had to drive around mega slow as i wasnt even allowed to overtake around the outside on these wide corners when someone is hugging the inside, id be just as bored.

in a lot of cars, like these lil FWD hatches that are mega good on corners, itd suck even worse to not be allowed to overtake, as youd be held up to fuck on the corners then left for dead by the quick but slower cornering cars on the straight.

thats not what a trackday is all about tho.

if there is a slower car infront of you on a corner you back off. you can then power thru the corner and shoot past them on the exit.

if youve got a hero infront that wont let you past, back off for half a lap and let him fook off, then have a quiet word later in the pits. track days are not the place for agressive driving

i tend to be quite a lot quicker than most things on track days, so yes i know exactly how it works, but i have the self control not to take risks on overtaking.

I would be interested in some pics from the day. I had a great day i have'nt done a trackday that relaxed in a long time!Really well run. With regards to overtaking on the outside of corners,i dont normally do it and on most trackays its not allowed but.....i have never been on a trackday where there was such big speed differences!I had to overtake on one lap around copse it was that or ram the person.
Really sad to see the M3 get wrecked hope it all gets sorted out, decided to go home after that! Those who thought it was greasy and slippy, you should see the Ring in the wet!Lol.
Thanks pee vee for the tape for my lights and yes R888 are wicked in the wet as long as you dont have to deal with puddles!!

Where Paul lost it is a propper bend in the wet!You would'nt even consider going past on the outside there 3/4th gear and feeding the power in.As for puddles i could tell you where they all were

sounds very boring indeed, no wonder he fed up with em.

and the exit isnt much safer IMO, 90% of the spins and crashes I saw on friday were on the EXIT of the corner.
people made it round the corner, thought they was safe then, boot it and go off massivley.
yup, deffo the safe way to do a trackday...
