So I thought I'd try out connecting to the internet using my phone (Nokia N73) and it's 3G connection on my laptop.

So I installed Nokia's PC Suite, connected to the phone, and hit the "Connect to the Internet". It activated the 3G connection on my phone, and told me it was connected.

Then I opened Internet Explorer on my laptop.... FUCK ME! It's stupidly fast! Honestly, this is faster loading PF, and most google pages/images than it is using my wifi!

PF can sometimes take AGES to open when using my wifi, which is streaming at 11Mbps, yet while connected through my phone, it's loading in seconds, even tho the connection is reporting only 460.8Kbps

How is this so much faster?

And more importantly, are T-Mobile gonna go nuts if I use this and charge me silly bills even tho I have the Web N Walk option on my account?

Before I got my 3 Modem, I used my N73 on O2, and even with their internet package my bill was 180 quid....

What internet are you on at home if you think 3G is fast?

 

You need the Web'n'Walk PRO option - Ł7.50 rather than Ł5 I think?

Rab - Crap Disconnecting and going back to Wifi I'm on Virgin 2mb cable internet, and it's speed is fine, just wifi isn't very quick when using my lappy....

cj - I dunno bout it being PRO, but I pay Ł7.50 a month for web n walk, not a fiver... To be honest, I can't see a Ł5 option, only Ł7.50?

I work on a ship. I'm sometimes 600 miles from my house with f-all to do.. except download porn from the internet. Hence my 3 mobile broadband modem thing.

 

I've never understood why you post most things twice? I spend all day out and about in my van, and I like to keep upto date on my emails, and amuse myself when bored waiting for a job, stuck in traffic jams etc... The web browser on my phone is shite (so need to get an iPhone) and I take my laptop to work anyway, so putting the two together (connection from phone coupled with the web browser and keyboard of laptop) makes perfect sense.... It's only when I'm at work, I don't really bother when out and about with friends etc (unless they REALLY boring lol)

 

got the 7.50 option on my phone since the day it came out. and conected to my laptops al the time.

laptop conection use is not allowed! its another 5 a month on top of the 7.50, but ive only ever ben billed 7.50.

i would keep a check of data useage online via tmobiles biling site, and check your not geting charged

hmm 12hr shift, not much going on, fuck all on tv at 2am, work internet blocks just about anything, usb my phone up to the pc and conect to the net via it!

 

I'm just on the phone with the girl at T-Mobile, just checking what I can and can't do - she says the same sort of thing : don't go on youtube, don't go on MSN, and even don't go on ebay - which kind of worries me, as I've already been on ebay and youtube on my phone handset

She also said that the standard cap for the Ł7.50 a month option is 1gb, and it allows browsing, email and media streaming, but then said that media streaming means it can get it, but if you use it, it then costs more

How do I check data usage on T-Mobile's site? Where am I looking?

Back to address Fuzzy's point - a good example is I can't get on Paypal with my phone handset. DOn't know why, it just don't work. Yesterday I really needed to get onto it - in the middle of a paypal dispute, message had been posted in the dispute console, I needed to read it and reply, but couldn't cos of stupid phone. However, I could have if I had been able to use my laptop, but couldn't get a mobile wifi signal! Same with ebay, I often can't get a bid in should I need to.

Think I found it Phil - logged into the site, and BILLS and UNBILLED USE and found a section I've never been in before Found tabs to look at Voice & Messaging, Mobile Data Use and Third Party Data Use.... So far all the Mobile Data use is showing nothing as Base Cost and Billed cost, and there's some entries from today, tho I check this back 2morrow as it says some phone use can take several hours to be updated...

No, I was astonished at the speed it loaded web pages, videos, forums etc on my laptop, when comparring to to my (11Mbps) wifi connection

1) I've only ever seen an advert, and only seen it maybe three times, for the iPhone 3G, yet I already based my opinion on the userbility of the iPhone on the 2G phone a good year or more before they even came out

2) Yes I was in the USA at the time when I first used one, with which I began to base an educated and expirienced impression of it's userbility and features

Furthermore - have you used one? I mean actually used one, as opposed to just playing with it for 5 mins in a phone shop? I have, hence why I claim to have an educated and expirienced opinion on it. As such, IMO, I honestly can say I have not used another handset phone that has an internet browser, nor user interface, as good, again IMO, as that of the iPhones OS, and more importantly to this particular note, it's Safari browser.

Could I get on Paypal with my Nokia N73's web browser? No. Could I on the iPhone? Yes, I have done it. Can I bid on items on ebay with my N73? I did once, but the other 3900 times it failed. Can I do it on the iPhone? Yes, I even put a bid in with 16seconds to go and thus won the item I was bidding on

Has the iPhone (or iTouch for that matter - they both run the same OS and Safari browser) ever failed to open a webpage I've tried to access via Safari? Actually, yes, I once, and only ever once, got the SAFARI CANNOT SHOW THIS PAGE message. Hit Refresh tho and it loaded. Has my Nokia N73 ever done that? Yeah, more times than it actually loads a page

The web browser on my N73 is shite. It's shite compared to the iPhone, and it's shite in it's own standings. I thought it before I used an iPhone/iTouch, and I think it even more after using one.

But this thread was never about iPhones, it was about how surprised I was at how quick I could load full Google image search pages, forums, YouTube vids etc using my phone's 3G connection as it's netpoint
