Default Proper car detailing V's Concourse...... discuss

Do you think, for instance a gold cup winning concourse 3DR like Ians old one...... In the hands of a proper car detailer would get any better????

Just got me thinking with all these recent threads about it.........

How clean is clean???

YES - concourse cars are very clean, but many still have swirlys.

I think imo detailing is an OCD derived illness from concourse perverts

Though imo again its pretty much the same thing, although in a sense it seems to me the detailing focuses a lot more on the paint rather than the cleanliness aspect. Concourse is more " clean " whereas detailing seems more on the " finish "

ive never seen concourse judges going around measuring paint thickness, which i think is just bloody neurotic

The blokes manifold cover on the Astra thread, proves that detailer's are werid fuckers. Useful if you want someone to clean your car right enough, but I wouldn't go to the pub with one....

Paintwork thickness isn't important to a concours judge though, whereas it can be very important to someone machine polishing their car.

As for the question in the thread title, it's far too vague a question.

Detailing is (to most people) about far more than a car's appearance on one specific day, which concours is.

Some concours cars definitely could be improved, others really could not

Detailing will often take a car PAST its new condition, I would imagine that potentially you could fail in concourse on the basis of it being too perfect?

Ive heard tails of minis failing in concourse because the panel gaps were too good after a rebuild and no longer constituted original condition, so I guess potentially it could be the same if some idiot starts maching polishing the headlights on his 3 door, you are giving them a non original finnish surely?

concourse and detailing can go hand in hand i feel. however i feel that they are two different things, concourse focus on things being clean, whereas detailing focusses more on the finish and durability of that finish.

there are many professional detailers across the country who offer concourse preperation as a service.

i have seen concourse cars that would definetly benefit from the experience of a detailer to improve the paint finish, and vice versa, ive seen detailers who would benefit from a concourse competitor on items such as underbody and engine detailing.

they are two different things, but if you combined the two properly, then the results would be outstanding!

In a Concours standard competition, yes, originality is the key to everything.

You can have competitions for Concours modified though, so all that has to go out the window.

In my opinion they are the same thing, ie

concourse = SAD!

Detailing = SAD!

I guess the detailing thing to an extent is a good thing, ie the wax they finally get round to using will seal in the perfect finish for a long time. Therefor washing the car in the future etc isn't going to scratch the paint.

Photographing 2 grown men posing next to a 0.5mm paint blob (one himself posing doing a macro picture of said microscopic defect) is just plain 'Sausage Jockey' material.

Getting your car detailed is a different thing altogether from concourse!
All detailing is, is making your car look the best it can, surely that isnt a bad thing?
Yes I agree the people that do it can get abit anal, and its not of much interest to me to actually do it myself, but I did get mine done, and I think the results speak for themselves!

You cant tell me that anyone who is into cars, and enjoys seeing their own one look good wouldnt be impressed to have a transformation done like this:

Afew before and after pics...

And finally, a 50/50 showing the swirls and scratches removed:

detailing is more liking servicing your paint... paint correction keeps the car look new or past new in some cases.. its like decent wax, using 2 buckets when you wash etc etc it actually saves you time because the car becomes easier to clean

Can't see why people get so hung up about what people do with their cars?

I enjoy having a mint car, and enjoy making other peoples cars look mint.

Some people are hapy to drive around in tuned up sheds...that's fine by me, i don't care one bit.

I actually prefer rolling my nice clean car out of the garage and taking it for a ragging than rolling some dirty banged up shitbox out.

Horses for courses and all that.
