Why does my dog roll in crap!!!!!
My dog seems to like rolling around in other dog crap, horse crap and cow pats!

Its happened loads of times recently now and its getting beyond a joke!
She seems to rub her face and ears in it and tries to get it all over her body as much as she can. Why she'd actually choose to do this is beyond me!
Anyone know why she's doing this as i really need to try and stop her doing it. It bloody stinks and its costing me a bloody fortune in shampoo!
Cheers.

female are the ones that do it more.its scenting.they are laying thier scent on it to say they are there.our little girl does it.they have scent glands behind their ears.its a way of saying they are about and are interested.bascially its two's company for dogs
both male and female will also do it on any prey they kill.its claiming it as theirs and is a sign to other dogs around that this is their kill and thier area.
our frequently do it on voles they catch over the field.they dont eat them, just kill the, scent them and leave.

I was always told its just part of certain dogs natural instincts as hunters - when wild dogs used to hunt they would roll on the ground to hide their scent from their prey. So in short your dogs just trying to disguise its natural odor.
Cheers all.
Im glad im not the only one then!

So if its just a scent and natural instinct thing then i dont mind so much. I was actually worried that she had some sort of strange fetish going on!
Thinking about it, she has done it on a dead rabbit before, and she also rubs her ears and face on her favourite toy too so that explains why now. I dont suppose you can really stop them if its what they want/need to do naturally??
Thing is though, i swear she does it on purpose. I only have to say the word BATH and she runs upstairs full pelt and jumps straight in the bath with the tail wagging like a good un! She loves having baths so probably enjoys smelling like a sewer cos she knows what coming when she gets home!

My lab does it. Fucking thing.
Only interested in fox pooh which is lucky - although we do have a huge fox problem localy so not all good.
Now I keep an eye on her, if I see her hit the deck head first I shout at her and she jumps up and legs it. Its all about the discipline

Aaahhhh, fox shit!! My parents house backs onto a beach and golf course and Fox's come into their garden at night. My dog LOVES rolling about in it, got to watch her like a hawk when I'm down and let her out the back! Get's it right in her ears and all over her face. Comes back looking quite proud of herself too
It STINKS! So bad!

they did do when young but not too bad now.tbh its a mix of things i think.
they see the mother do it when they are young as she cleans up after them by doing this.
and also it can be down to an iron deficiancy(sp)
our girl has not done it in ages but we give them veg in thier food so they get it from there now too.and cod liver oil tablets are good for them.their coat and bones
On of the dogs my mum once took in escaped one day and came back home green - yes, he'd been rolling in cow shit..... even the labrador turned his nose up at him, and when she'd finished trying to bath him, most of the bathroom was covered in it too...... whole house stunk for days.....
RIP to all three - and the fact that I will never own a dog - EVER.

we give them holland and barrett norwegian cod liver oil tablets, 410mg tablets
a 500g bottle is next to nothing and lasts ages.and we have two.really isnt worth buying theso called dog ones.no different and twice the price
I just had to wash my westie tonight and he STILL stinks!!!!! Yuk!
I returned home to find hi bannished out in the porch and he was covered in 'green stuff'! My wife siad he went mad and started rolling in the stuff.
I still don't know what it is as it looks like cow poo, but it's on my land which I just cut yesterday! All I can think of is deer poo.
I'm just away to wash him again as the Puppy Fresh spray is getting weaker!
