Default starting problem, can anyone help, 4x4 saff

Here's the story so far, the car doesn't get used much so the battery goes flat quite often and it fails to start, usually ok after it gets charged.
Recently after charged it either just turns over really slow or clicks so I bought a new battery and didn't seem any better so I then bought a new starter and its still the same just clicks the starter however as soon as I put jump leads on it starts instantly.

Any ideas on what else I can try.

Cheers
Norman

Sounds like it cant draw a good current. I would advise to check the ground earthing between battery/chassis and chassis/engine.

exactly right; i've seen this before; replace the earths with some new heavier duty cable and replace the red cable between battery and starter

sounds to me like everything is fine, but you have a parasitic drain draining your battery......

All the wiring on the battery terminals is all good and clean as is the wiring at the starter but I,m not sure where the engine to chassis earth is to check it.

from memory isnt there one that goes from neg battery to the battery tray and anoth to the block?

to be honest i scrapped both of them and made 2 new earths using massive cable....never had any earth problems since

So it seems you've got 2 different kind of problems; a draining problem and a starting one.

- For the starting problem I would make sure the battery is in good condition and fully loaded.
- Then with a pair of extra hands and a multimeter I would measure the voltages.
- First between the minus pole of the battery to the big plus connection on the startermotor itself. Measure it in in rest and than in starting position to see any differences.
- Than measure from the minus on the startmotor and the follow all the grounding connection unill you're back at the minus of the battery.

Always keep the minus connection of the multimeter to the minus pole on the battery and measure the voltages with the other pin to the different connections. With this kind of measurement you can easily find the bad connection because that has got a big voltage difference to earth when starting. A bad earth connection will give a little to non voltage readout at rest (between the negative pole of the battery and the connection) and a higher value when starting the car at one point of the connection and no voltage readout at the other side of the connection.

Hope this will help you.
