Default iPhone and car head unit

What I would like to do, is to have a head unit (pref Kenwood) and be able to charge and play my iPhone music through the head unit.

Ive seen some models with USB ports, but do these work ok with the iPhone and charge it ok?

What do other people use, ive seen the FM transmitters for them, but would like a cabled version. Something with a cradle and a cable going to head unit to charge/play would be ideal.

Halfords have a couple of resonably priced headunits in at the mo', Alpine & Kenwood, both with USB ipod connections. Thats the way to go as it uses the line out from the ipod as opposed to the headphone out. This improves sound quality and volume no end.

Halfords are rip off merchants, do you have any particular model/cable numbers you recommend I can do a search on?

Cheers for the reply

Does it charge it Jim as well, and can you control the ipod from the head unit?
