2WD T5 box will handle a fair bit of abuse, stage 3 tune on a 4x4 and its only a matter of time before the box goes bang

i wouldnt advise going 2wd, as 4x4 is far far better all round.

i think the reason 2wd boxes seem stronger is because they just wheelspin rather than dig in like the 4x4

a mate of mine runs a big spec mk2 escort, 530bhp, loads of torque,

all on standard 4x4 box and diffs, has ran like it for 10 years, never broke anything

its real light weight, and spins up rather than digging in like shonkey does

engine, it depends on spec, big power aint cheap to achieve reliably

you dont have to have a trick rear diff, you can put the bigger diff/shafts/beam in from a 2wd in the back and it'll more than handle the abuse. The ratios are 0.02 out IIRC which is nothing to split hairs over.

Why spend Ł1000 on a diff when you can pout a full 2wd back axle in for 1/3 of that?

Cheers

I imagine this would be easy to do?
What about the rear hubs, would they be needed also???
Would the standard prop length fit onto the 2wd diff

2wd all the way. 4wd is dull even with 400bhp where as 2wd will keep you smiling as the arse end overtakes you.

Yeah!! and goes straight into a lampost or crash barrier

My motto for this old argument

2wd for going sideways, doing doughnuts and all the boyracer tricks
4x4 for grip off the mark and on the twisty bits

the v6 box uses exactly the same ratios as a cossie box, only the bell housings are different, same diffs in 2.9v6 aswell

my gearbox in mine has done well and that gets abuse now and then

i used to go through a gearbox each month on greens on my last one

this one is a higher spec engine but witha hydraulic clutch which i thinks helps loads better have never destroyed a diff yet either and only snapped 1 shaft

was this aimed at my suggestion of using 2wd? If so then literally the whole 2wd saph (not 3dr the arb locations are different) beam goes in place of the 4x4 one....only thing to change over is the brakes as 4x4 are vented and 2wd are solid (they bolt straight on).

prop will fit.

2wd and 4x4 rear hubs are same

Cheers,
Dan.

P.S. you can also fit a 2wd diff into the 4x4 rear beam by removing 1/2 inch (EDIT 1/4 inch NOT 1/2 inch ) from each side of top lugs (plz check before cutting on my advice). Not sure if you need shafts (thinking not). that way you only have to buy a diff....and shafts max...prob the most cost effective way if you have

Thanks alot for that, yes i read an article/web page where a guy had photos and a very good despription on how to cut the 2WD diff into the beam and rethread the casing so you could bolt it all up, just can't remember where it was.... I'll have a look for it now though, thanks thats been a good help!

Thinking about it and reading what I wronte it makes sense for it to be 1/4 inch off (totalling the 1/2 inch difference).....so please check the thread before cutting.....

no probs mate...It's an easy way to save a grand IMO. as on a 4x4 you'd need crazy power to break a 2wd rear diff.

Cheers

Both 4x4 saf's i have owned both did the gearbox's but i own a two wheel drive now and am seriously contemplating getting another 4x4 cos i miss them.
Each time my box went duff the first time it cost me 350 to get sorted and the second time about 400 but they never let me down once they had been repaired.
If you're new to em get a 4x4 they drive so much better i think
