What sort of gains can you expect out of those basic mods?? They're 343bhp as standard arent they??

yes mate they are 343.....i'd be happy if i could get 380 without spending stupid amounts. Thats the problem with n/a cars tho, you dont get as much bang per bucks as ya do with turbo cars.

Dinan's intake system or the CSL intake plus decent exhaust system (try eisenmann for the exhaust) should see you closing into mid 350s if not 360.

Yea, specially highly strung N/A engines like the M3 or Honda VTEC engines which come highly tuned as standard...... I'm led to believe that big lazy yank V8s are pretty simple to extract power from though.

I heard a CSL with an intake and exhaust at Knockhill, it sounded absolutely amazing... deep and throaty induction roar, and then a mental rip from the exhaust after it went past.

Ive currently got one on the Dyno to find out !! i dont believe all these "chip it and get 380 bhp straightaway " stories , ive removed the Vanos and fitted ARP rod bolts but the rest is a std engine ! Will let you know tomorrow what it makes , its a KMS ecu by the way .

whatever you do you NEED to change the exhaust, the standard one just sounds TERRIBLE.

Supercharger I think is the way to go if you want real gains.

I think chip filter and exhaust will get u 5bhp if ur lucky. I think 380 real bhp is quite a long way off as most of them only make 330 bhp anyway as std. How you get 50bhp out of something as simple as those mods I will never know!

Can't wait to see the dyno results. Do you have the ability to mod it so you can see the before and after escosjim? Can't wait to see what works and what doesnt!

Cheers

Agree, I had exhaust, panel filter with airbox mod and chip in the e36 M3. It did drive better but wasn't huge gains, certainly not over 20bhp, maybe 15 at most. Exhaust made no difference whatsoever other than making a better sound.

Reason all this 380bhp and big gains shite gets said so often is the owners are generally clueless mugs with no idea about tuning, just believe whatever shit the people tell em to get their cash.

Some people whos gone from Cossies etc and are used to tuning cars know better, but most owners arnt that kind of person are they.

They wankers with gay suits and bluetooth headsets

F-ck Tony...........Your really going for it....! ! ! !

Basically for the avarage petrol head, the M3 is already a highly tuned engine, and BMW M Power Boys have already done all the obvious tuning prior to putting the engine into production, so there's no "Easy" way to gain big amounts of power.........If there was, then M Power would have done it.

It's a hard engine to tune in the traditional manner, as everything's already done. For big gains, then it's big money and a supercharger. Same with all the M Power Engines, they're already very highly tuned, so it makes it hard to find any significant increases without spending big money.

Interesting to see what that makes on the dyno.

like you guys say - its already tuned, to get 380bhp i would imagine you would need revised cams and pistons, at the expense of drivability on the road.....

Ive talked to several race tuners about this and im positive that anything better than about 370bhp will need cams and pistons , but i needed to tune my engine on the new ECU anyway and with the Vanos removed and just a set of rod bolts weve got a sweepstake going as to what power it will make . The whole idea is that the car will be able to do 1 hour or even 24hr races ( its already finished 2 of these ) , so it was sensible to stick it on the Dyno anyway , the power gains are merely a bonus of reliability .

Because on a race car you just want it on the most aggressive setting and left there as you arent worried about low end performance or economy etc?

Plus I bet its a bastard to map on the KMS if its even possible to do so.

And of course its one more potential point of failure.

5 grand, and the key elements are the cams and running it on 99 ron fuel.

anyone claiming similar power on standard cams, is talking absolute bollocks

Did you have a bad eperience at thorney Jim?

I've only used them for a check over before the waranty ran out and they seemed OK.

Other ones to look at are Simpsons who I think are the guys that did Simon Norris's fab work on his Evo........

Ooops , forgot to post that one .
Thats right the best we saw was 352 bhp but with 268 torque , even for this we had to change injectors as they maxed out at 328 bhp .This was with std exhaust headers, std cams and a 63,000 mile engine removed from a salvage car and then dumped on a dyno . to me its an impressive 117 bhp per litre from a std roadcar !!
The Vanos is only active upto 4800 revs or so , i wont see less than about 5500 in race trim so pointless , also the KMS is a bit more primitive than Motec or similar and for ease of mapping & reliabiltiy its best taken off .

question, why do thorney motorsport quote higher gains from remaps than superchips?

...and they use standard superchips software?

and yes efe i know your car is very good, i was properly impressed. But i'm sure you paid through the nose for it?

i was going to hand over £650 for a "full stage 2 remap" until i actually found out all it involved was putting in a SUPERCHIP!

Yep its 100% Cams, exhaust and chipped, that graph is also the lowest power run on the car, highest being 397bhp but thorny have posted the lowest run as they are not chasing figures, also it was only ran on RON98 and not 99
