Default PS3 Problems already :( - any guru's in the house?

I've bought a shiny new PS3 - chuffed to bits with the £360 deal I got on the package - PS3, Extra controller, I-Robot on Blu-Ray and Grid for my chosen game

About 3 months ago I also bought a Philips 50PFP5532D 50" Hi-Def Plasma TV.

No problems so far, untill I tried to use the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the TV - just a black screen. - the standard scart shit that comes with the PS3 works, but is very poor quality

So I do a little bit of research - it turns out my TV is not HDCP compliant and therefore the encrypton from the PS3 cannot be decoded by my TV, so the PS3 gets a failed handshake from the TV and reverts back to the default AV Output.

Now the problem I have is this.

1) Do I stick my hand deeper into my not so deep pocket and buy a new TV that is HDCP compliant - for the size I want I will be looking at nearly a grand again

2) Do I use the component input and enjoy piss poor picture quality on a display that is capable of far more.

3) Can I buy a HDCP Stipper to remove the encryption key from the datastream but leave the digital video and audio alone?

Anyone care to help, as I'm majorly pissed with the fact that Sony do not state you need a HDCP compliant display, no-one in Curries, Comet, Pissyworld or Blockbuster cared to mention it at all - they just wanted the sale - now I am left £360 lighter with a PS3 that might aswell be a fucking orniament on the shelf as it is no use at all without using HDMI

Hmmmmmmm - seriously tempted at taking it back as it happens as the main reason I bought it was for the Blu-Ray player, games are just a bonus IMHO

No VGA In on my TV Jim - I was hoping that a HDMI to HDMI stripper was available somewhere at a reasonable price...........

I've just bought a new cable to try and eliminate that, as the cable that came with the PS3 is a cheapy thing, I'll give an update when I get home tomorrow (at the wifes lol)

Cable is fine, HDMI is digital so transmits 1's and 0's and does not suffer like a component cable can. Is there not an option to set the PS3 at 720p or 1080i as I thought HDCP was only an issue on blu ray at 1080p. Only Blu Ray is native 1080p as games are mostly upscaled to 1080p by software so you wont lose any quality by selecting 720p.

I personally would not shell out £1000 for a new TV to play a PS3. It may be worth checking on avforums if you could get an amp that has hdmi connectivity and link the PS3 through that. Can you use another TV to check to make sure the PS3 is not faulty?

Failing that, I would refund the PS3 and buy an xbox 360 if its games you want or if you bought the ps3 for blu ray you can pick a blu ray player up for £199.

Try switching the PS3 off, then hold down the power button on the unit until it beep's the 2nd time and see if it show's a display and then let's you set it up. Failing that, either flog the PS3 and buy a Blu Ray player, or maybe flog the TV and buy another. Or, let a lava lamp blow up next to them both and claim off the house insurance

mine runs through a hdmi switch, no problems as the switch also has the dvd player and the sky hd box running through it

might be worth shelling out £100 to see if that solves the problem or i'd be doen to the place you bought it from asking for a refund as it's an unwanted gift for your mum/dad/grandparents

The one on Comet has an 05 suffix to the P/No. the spec list I found has a suffix of 12 - maybe they revised the set (bit dodgy for punters though using the same model number)?

Found the /o5 suffixed one, and it also says:

HD Ready
Enjoy the exceptional picture quality of High Definition pictures and be fully prepared for HD sources like HDTV settop box or Blu-ray disc. HD Ready is a protected label that offers picture quality beyond that of progressive scan. It conforms to strict standards laid out by EICTA to offer a HD screen that displays the benefits of resolution and picture quality of a High Definition signal. It has a universal connection for both analog YPbPr and uncompressed Digital connection of DVI or HDMI, supporting HDCP. It can display 720p, and 1080i signals at 50 and 60Hz.
And also....

2 HDMI inputs
HDMI makes an uncompressed digital RGB connection from the source to the screen. By eliminating conversion to an analog signal, it delivers an unblemished image. The non-degraded signal reduces flicker and leads to a clearer picture. HDMI intelligently communicates the highest output resolution with the source device. The HDMI input is fully backward compatible with DVI sources but includes digital audio. HDMI uses HDCP copy protection. With 2 HDMI inputs you can connect multiple HD sources, for instance an HD settop box, and a Blu-ray player. Your TV is fully prepared for the HD future.
I know your own experience suggests Comet's spec sheet is right, but I rarely trust spec' sheets from the hight street retailers and check the manufacturer.

Might be worth contacting Philips to see why their spec sheet doesn't match your set?

if your TV is not HDCP compliant (wich seems to be open for debate) you WILL NOT get the PS3 to display on it, people, stop telling him his PS3 is broken when it is not

from the sounds of what youre experiencing, it isn't

have you changed the display on the actual PS3 settings with the normal lead in there? you have to change it to HDMI lead, before you can plug the lead in sorry if that ISNT the problem, but it usually is

Seconded, This was the first thing I thought ! Gracie setup your PS3 to HDMI (whilst running through the scart lead) and (fingers crossed) it'll work (once you have switched over to the HDNI lead). I cant believe your TV wont TBH, its not as if its been pinched out of Noahs Ark ! (or has it )

Tried everything as said above people. Still no joy.

Got it working via componenet and it works very well, blueray is amazing.

BUT, and here's the pinch point,

I am very very very unimpressed with the console and its going back to the shop for a refund

The fact that none of the specs dictate that your TV must be HDCP complient is a start - what a complete twats trick by Sony and the "industry" to shove this out without warning that some, especially modern, TV's arn't compatible with the console.

I feel like I have been mis-sold the console

unimpressed with the console...?

PS3's are quality... Planet Earth in blu-ray is simply awesome to watch.. COD against your mates passes the time and is such a laugh..

the fact you bought a cheap TV shouldnt make the PS3 unimpressive :P

HDCP compliance is pretty much standard nowadays, and i would say from the adverts that you have found, that you have a case to go and exchange the TV at Comet for something that does what all TV's should nowadays. You simply have to say it was one of teh main reasons you bought it, and therefore it wasnt fit for teh purpose it was sold for. Its not the PS3's fault really.

Stu - I would if I had bought the TV from Comet, but it came from that direct-tv.co.uk place (the warehouse is about 3 miles from me) - but hey ho

Think I'll go back to bed now tho, the last 2 days I have spent sicking and shitting the life out of me - some dodgy virus going round again

yep, even tho it came with 12 months return to base warranty, I seriously don't think they would honour a swap for a set with HDCP purely on the ground I can't get a PS3 working on it

I totally agree the Blu-Ray is amazing, watched "I Am Legend" last night via the componenet at 1080i and the quality was absolutely stunning, totally amazing, but I want to use the HDMI cable and this isn't possible.

Westy - I didn't buy a cheap TV - the thing was the best part of £700, and that was still £300 cheaper than Comet at the time of purchase

Graceland - I am not disputing the fact that 700 quid is a lot of money, but for a 50 inch Plasma it is peanuts... low end spec etc.. Feel sorry for you though as its not working as you would like.

I paid double that for a 40 inch LCD... but plug the HDMI cable in and job done... still as good as it was the day I bought it, 2 years ago.

If you can watch blu-ray... whats the problem?

The problem is its not using the HDMI cable, its using the component and therefore loosing image and audio quality

Such as life I guess

3 months ago Lee not a year ago - but digging a bit further into the model histroy, as Bill has done above, it seems that there are 3 or 4 revisions of the model all with the same model number - all different specs

the the one that was 300 quid more would had been a different revision, allowing you to connect HDMI etc.... Live and learn though hey..

Most likey, a bit of a pisser really - you would of thought that the model number would of changed for a different revision, instead of a suffix "/05 or /12" on the end of the main number (that no-one seems to quote)
