Cat D is the lowest type of insurance write off could have been very light panel damage, stolen recoverd etc imo nothing at all to worry about just ask the seller what its on the list for it will only be something minor ive owned and repaired a few cat D cars.

As said, and driving a cat d now, that has NOT been repaired as only a dent!!
These are the biggest bargains, but as with everything check carefully.
No VIC check no MOT(unless expired).

You also have to tell your insurance, otherwise when you make a claim, it becomes void.

there is also now a cat F for fire damaged vehicles, they can't be put back onto the raod and have to be crushed due to noxious stuff that might have been released in the fire

Surely the damage cant be that 'minor' if its on an expensive car like that. Must have had to be around £10k of damage for it to be wrote off? Hardly minor is this is the case?

I understand that on cheaper older cars a £1000 car could be written off for something as 'minor' as a dent or scrape, but surely not an expensive car.

easiest thing to do is run a hpi check on it and ask the seller why it's cat d

if the stories match up then fair enough

how much is that car worth without being on the register? is it worth the risk?

Hence the little wink

I reckon a scrape down the side would probably put that on a cat D.

New wing, door, rear quarter and a wheel, wouldn't be "that" far out to be honest.

i was looking at a cat d focus st the other week,2 yrs old,it only needed a wing/bumper and wheel,i thought surely no insurance company would right that off, then i thought i wonder if it was caught up in all the floods last yr? hence the real reason it was written off?

I was registered with Universal Salvage, but to be honest their cars are bloody expensive now. By the time you've bought them and done them up you might as well have bought a 'straight' one.

bumper and wings on a st mondeo is enough to make it a cat d, as i found out the other week the parts that go to making up the front end are a good few quid, plus the labour intenside bit of painting everything and stripping and removal etc it soon starts to rack up

there are 25 different parts that make up the front bumper and wings, plus all the trim fittings and it soon adds up

Might be worth trying to find out what happened to it. If it's a good price, it's been done well and it's something you're going to keep then might be worth a punt.
Might have just been stolen and recovered.

I've never informed the insurers it was a cat d , and have been paid out on two of them, kept all the evidence of repairs though, and BOTH were inspected by insurers prior to payout.
