Default ST220 Starter Motor and Flywheel

Hi everyone first post on here.
I own an 04 plate ST220 with 33k on the clock. Last night starter motor packed in, sounded like it wasnt engaging the flywheel.
Took it to garage this morning who said it has probably damaged the flywheel aswell because he has had a few in with the same problem.
Anyone know if this is a common problem?
Also he reckons they can change the flywheel without removing the gearbox never heard of that before anyone know if its true?
Luckily its all covered under extended warranty cos its gonna be expensive i reckon

Thanks

Chris

Any ideas how it knackers the starter? Is there usually any signs to watch out for or is it just a sudden thing? Mine packed in suddenly up to that point eveything had been working fine

the dual mass flywheel is just that, 2 bits of flywheel to take up the slack

thing is, they tend to not last too well with the amount of torque produced and the easy fix is to get a new single peice solid flywheel fitted instead

the only problem with this is that you will need to remove the box and clutch, which will mean it's easier to fit a new clutch at the same time seeing as it's going to cost that much money

here are some pics of what a fucked flywheel looked like:

that cost us nearly a grand to fix
