my savage x 4.6 keeps eating spur gears and i dont know why? i have changed the engine plate becuse it was bent but still strips the gear, anybody got any ideas why?

 

sounds like your engine is vibrating itself loose and coming away from the spur gears and chewing them to pieces. Clean the screws you use to mount the engine from the underside of the chassis and the threads and use some threadlock. Either that or your layshaft is bent and the spurs aren't sitting right.

its the Slipper Clutch...its done up too tight, i know it, i own one

 

there seems to be a bitof a wobble on the spur when you sin it could this be causing the problem?

 

ive heard differnt stories about the steel suprs tho some say do it other say dont?

 

wobble? mine didnt spin straight when i put the steel conversion on, turns out 2 of the screws on the gear fall out that hold the gear onto the plate, pretty much took a chunk out of the clutch bell, this wouldnt happen on a plastic one anyway

trust me, your clutch is far too tight!

 

had my X for about 2 years now, would of given up onit if i didnt have the Conversion

im new to all this so bear with me, im going to sound really stupid now do you mean the slipper clutch on the back of the spur or somthing else?

 

The "usual" stripping gears cause is the pinion and spurs coming apart under vibration. I thought that would be a good starting point.

As for the Savage slipper clutch setup, I haven't any experience of that but my nitro and electric car knowledge would prompt me to look that I have the engine and spurs aligned properly and that they aren't vibrating loose. Simply what I would do.

 

i have meshed them up using the paper trick and thread locked the bolts tight so i would hope it hasnt moved?

 

on the Spur gear, there is a Nut holding it on, with a little like spring onit yeah? Tighten it then loosen it like a turn & abit, it will be in the manual

There will be an Matching picture of what the Clutch bell & Spur gear, how much gap there should be between, basicly you want 50/50, you want it to Roll freely, if you cant roll the car, then your engine needs moving abit to the side

but plastic Spurs strip all the time if they are tight.

good post, mine is in the garage needing a new one. But I just ordered two new standard ones, might look at the steel route next time. Is it that straight forward or does the whole clutch bell need changing?

IIRC stripping gears are usually done when you accelerate in the air mid jump, but thats the only way you can straighten them so they land properly so I guess a steel conversion is they only way to stop this if you like doing jumps?

 

sounds like yours is too tight too paul, loosen it pal

 

if it was because i was doing jumps i could understand but mine don't last long enough to do any jumps lol

have not been able to get a new spur yet today,a friend of mine has some spares at his house but hes out at the moment so just waiting for him to come home and will try it

My X is in about 3 main piece's atm, Need new diffs all round, driveshafts, plastic supports and really a new chassis. Ooops

hello people i replaced the damaged spur with a new spur tonight and meshed it up with the help of a friend and it works a treat, it seems that the spur was to tight only problem now is that one of the brake pads has popped out at least its going forward now

 

you mean one of the Slipper pads on the clutch, you can buy them anyway

Sold my cars this afternoon

 

no not the slipper pad on the back of the slipper, i have the twin s/s disk setup and one of the pads has come loose so i had to take the car apart rebuild the brakes then put car back together again, just hope it still works
