Its very, very difficult to get subs to sound good with the boot open, they have too much airspace and it unloads the subs, so they flap like hell and generally sound crap, mine will hit the backplate with the boot open.
I'd be looking at buying 1 sub and making a decent enclouser for it, RE audio are excellent, and you might even pick up a second hand XXX for 200 quid, which, nothing is even going to come close too for that kind of money really, aslong as your box and power supply are good enough.

Well said that man.
The hardest thing to do with any audio system is to make it sound good outside
Was at audio advices open day recently, 2nd loudest car in the SPL that i seen measured about 150dB, it was a Fiat Panda with one 10" mtx 9009 thunder but was powered by 2 rather large amps with some fancy wiring, one amp doing the plus and the other doing the minus. Was f**kin loud all the same
i'm looking at getting a sub too, but i want something that won't take up too much boot space in the mondeo, but at the same time, i'm not after soemthing that's not going to make the grade either just ebcause it's all show and no go
not that i'm into impressing the waitresses at macdolnalds you understand

this is my old setup in my 309, gives you an idea of what a proper sub box should be like (this one was undersized too)

Not the neatest or best looking, but it would play music at 144 DB's.

Here's what I had in me Esc Cos:

and now its in me Skoda:

Sounds pretty good for one sub and I will carpet it sooner or later! To make the sub box sound better I put some P40 (iirc)filler round the inside edges (Which each piece of wood meets) so the sub air is "Trapped" in the box. Made it sound sooooo much deeper!

you can use any sub really IF you create the right box for it to be in ... and thats the hard part .. i had 2 x 12'' in the boot of the erst ... but no room for anything else
theile parameters are supplied for a reason

A single JL Audio sub will be all you'll need mate but you'll need a decent amp. I have a JL 12W3V2 in my Integra and it sounds fine with the boot open!! Doesnt need a huge box either...

Here's my old van if you want to go a bit extreme!!!!!!
