But could'nt match the full titanium Acrapovic system I had on my ol' race-tuned ZX-7R (with flatslide carbs) which screamed like a banshee on full chat

Noob question, not long been on bikes poking about on a 400cc now, ZX-7R or Gixxer 750? Next bike deffo one of these...?

 

I've had a ZX7-R (seriously modified) & the ol' SRAD Gixxer 750. The lighter, revvier GSXR is more manic & the Kwak' (when standard) was bigger & more planted. The ZX7 suits taller riders & both are a bit wristy on long journeys.

Getting on a bit now, and newer 600s would see 'em off, but far better lookswise than todays bikes.
