Default Lack of power on a t38 cosworth

Hello all

I have a t38 cosworth engine running just over 30psi so should be around the 440bhp. Engine was built about 5,000 miles ago so its fresh and it runs fine doesnt smoke etc. I started to think It was lacking power although the boost gauge was still reading over 30psi and had no running problems as I said so thought it was me. I took it on a rolling road for a power run last week and it only made 380bhp.

The car is a saph 2wd.

Any ideas what to look at to why its low on power?

Regards

Could be down to LOTS of things:
1. Intercooler not man enough, so high ACTs giving low power figures.
2. Standard head / cams still on car, so WON'T be the claimed power figure.
3. Car hasn't been mapped properly.
4. Combination of all the above.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

The car was live mapped by msd.

The intercooler is an rs500 item and like I said it just doesnt seem to have the punch it used to have even on these cold days on the road. Hence why I took it on the rollers to start with.

So thinking more like maybe a sensor down or lack of compression or something?

It doesnt miss fire, its using no more fuel, no oil leaks, idles finem drives normal, boost ok etc Maybe its just me use to the power.

Regards

What make intercooler?

To get 440bhp, the head would have to be ported and have some decent cams in. Also, the 440bhp figure would be a gross figure you would see on an ENGINE dyno, so in the car with ancilliaries added, you would expect to lose 15-20bhp, so the net in-car figure would be closer to 420bhp. Again, please note, that this would be for a fully worked engine. If this is a standard engine with just a T38 bolted on, then 380bhp is very good .

Did the rolling road operator comment in any way?

Mike, I think the numbers are academic, it's feeling the car has lost power/punch that is the concern? What boost controller are you running, and what is the FULL spec of the engine and ancilleries?

Might also be that you have just got used to it.....

i've just changed the actuator on my T38, it was hitting 30psi but the boost was dropping off quite a bit, that caused it to lose power, it made 405bhp on the dyno, last time it was 435 on a dyno that reads lower, if i get time i'll put it back on the dyno tomorrow & see what happens!

I dont know what car this is as your username gives nothing away but we certainly wont have claimed 440bhp if its on std head and cams. Sounds more like a Turbo Technic sales team quote to me.
