i know loads of people have got these in the post from porsche. anyone actually done it? i love the 911 and really fancy driving one, but don't wanna look a twat as i have no means to buy one even if i did really like it

I was once a serial test driver. My method was pretty simple. Phone and ask about buying one. Ask about trading in an expensive car. I have a "Mercedes ____ and was thinking about the 911 as a replacement...". Talk about prices and options. Don't mention test drives. Say you have your eye on a certain model. It'll be a company car, etc etc. By the end of the conversation, as long as you've given the impression that you'll probably be buying any day now they'll invite you to come and drive one. Look smart when you turn up and whatever you arrive in hide it round the corner.

After the drive is when you face the challenge of fending off the sales people who will ring you repeatedly and hassle you.

my friend did something similar with an exige......and they have hounded him ever since, and its almost making him buy one (now he can almost afford it)

i bet he'll put off the ring trip until the test drive too if he can get away with it, i certainly would

 

i'd just tell them straight, i've not interest in buying one as i can't afford it i just wanted a to drive a porsche that'll get em off your case

 

I keep getting invitations from a BMW Delership in Kent.........to come to an open day to view the....."Whatever".......I'm guessing this is becuase I nearly bought an M5 that I was looking at when I was searching for one. I would go....but Kent is quite a drive from Portsmouth. I did get an invite to the open day for the new M5.......but again, In Kent......arghhh.

Funnily enough the Aston Martin Salesman didn't chase up very hard after Maria delivered her verdict on the new V8 Vantage

 

BMW called me almost everyday for about 2 months after I test drove an M3 last year, even after I told them I'd bought something else. Not heard from them since though

 

its not a test drive, i think it's more or a PR thing. if you invite car enthusiasts to drive your car and they like it, they tell all their friends how much they liked it, and they get good publicity. after all word of mouth is very strong in the "scene".

thats how i look at it anyway, i have NO intention of buying a brand new 997

the alpine circuit at millbrook is awesome - you'll hardly know that you've come back from the 'ring

after the test drive, tell them it's slow compared to your 24v sierra
