escort cosworth lowering and driveshafts
hiya guys i have just got an escort cosworth after selling my rst. Not really that clued up on the cosworth yet. The car is fitted with coil overs and is really low, there is a noise coming from the front of the car, sounds like a kind of knocking noise. would anyone like to take a guess at this being the driveshaft as the car is so low? i do like the look of it as it is but if its going to cause a problem then ide like to know how low is safe? where is the best place to get hold of some driveshafts and am i better off changing both? thanks guys matt.
if the noise is comming from the front r/h side and the car is as low as you say, then be very carefull. ecoz and 4x4 saphs driverside front shafts can pop out in certain conditions if the car is lowered to much.this is a known problem with lowering saphs and ecozzys
if your engine mounts are old worn and you give it large with some steering lock on then it could pop and it appears to only affect the driver side front.
the solution is
1 bring the car back up to std height
2 buy an entended shaft from GGR or who ever stocks them and put it in.
the extended shaft is 10mm longer that the standard one and is the safe option if lowering and you only need to replace the driverside.
i have seen this happen 3 times to mates cars and i fitted a longer shaft to my own saph when i fitted coilovers and lowered it.
its quite possible that the previous owner did this already and that the knock is something else. but get it checked out or it could be more expensive that a longer shaft
