Default what causes tramlining

Ive heard this lots and had it lots when my S2 was on 17's, but never asked 'why it does it'? Why does bigger wheels make it do this?

imo bigger/wider wheels give more leverage against already tired bushes hence why tramlining is more noticable when you swap to bigger rims.

Also directional tyres, which I guess are the norm more on bigger wheels.

and the lower arms ??

steering rack ???

top mounts ???

these ALL make a difference, but again just the larger size will affect the car anyway, fit

you need to make sure the centreline on the replacement rims are the same as your normal rims

and seeing as most are only skiiny rims that get replaced with wider ones this might explain the cause

that said, i noticed that when swapping over to 8" rims from 7.5" ones caused the steering to get noticably lghter

Tramlining, as the name implies is a tendancy for the wheels of a car to follow the longitudinal ruts in the road as found in highly worn lanes or where heavy truck traffic is common, funnily just like a tram following its tracks. Its exacerbated by wider tyres as they hit more irregularities and varied offsets which affect suspension angles. Worn components only allow tramlining to be more pronounced rather than causing it. performance wheel angles such as camber and caster make it harder to manage once the car begins to follow the ruts.
Cheers,

Justin p
