Default Is a 70AMP Alternator enough for a 2wd Cos?

Reason i ask is, my local motor factors have the 70AMP in stock, but not the 90AMP, but the light came on today on the way to work, and i need to change it. Do i need to look around for a 90 or will the 70 be enough?

Cheers!

how much is the replacement alternator cause you'll find if you get your own re-conned it'll be cheaper i had mine completely over-hauled for £50

No. Has to be a 90 amp one, or you run the risk of the car running lean under high load with lights / stereo / fans / heater fans etc running.

I'm just putting a 145amp one on mine, as the 90 amp one is not sufficient for three fuel pumps....

i need to uprate mine now from 70 to 90A, 70 is for 3drs, as they dont have heated front screens, and a few less electrics

just taken the original ford one off, and its actually a 70amp one. So im gunna replace it with the same. As Ryan has said, the 90's were for cars with more electrics.

70 is plenty, no alternator will put out CONTIUOUSLY it's rated power, it is a peak, much more than about half the rated power and they will get too hot, and fail.
If you want a more powerful one just get it rewired in DELTA ,as opposed to STAR.
DELTA will give more current than a star connection.

the lower spec cars had 55amp alternators, then they jumped up to the standard 70 amp and the higher end ones had the 90 amp versions

if you are stuck you can always opt for the granada version which will bolt on if it's the correct version listed if you want it, besides, it's not as if you will notice any increase in getting hte 90 amp one but you may notice it with a 55 amp little diddly version

changed on about a year ago and the 55 amp one came out easy enough but the 90 amp one was much bigger physically and wouldn't slot through the same gap

my grocery information is correct as far as relating to the amperage of the various alternators as found on the engines fitted to some ford sierra's is concerned thank you very much

unforutnatly, the uk spec cars came with 70 and 90 amp versions, the 55 amp one was from a dohc 90 spec car from hungary or the like

They all do as far as im aware mate. It doesnt go out till it hits a certain Voltage, then switches off after that preset voltage. Its like a alternator voltage checker.

fook knows? i thought all alternators did that, as they dont hit full voltage to 1800 RPM or so. I think it depends on how high your car revs on choke/cold start.
