Default Potential Owner Rust Query

Hello, ive been wanting an escos since a young lad and have now finally built the courage to take the plunge and buy one......or at least i thought i had

The problem what i have is ... after seeing the rusty cill thread the other day i have really been questioning the fact of paying 15k or so on a car what could be rotten as a pear.

Im seeing threads with escos's that look imaculate in every way..interier, exterier, spotless engine bay but then the owners are saying they are having to have floor pans, cills etc etc welded in some escorts that are only on m/n reg,

I thought the days of basically 10years and your car is rotten had gone?

Just wondering if there is a chance of getting an escos with no rust even if it ment spending over my budget??

Im starting to think owning an escos is like being married to a page 3 girl with terminal cancer

mate any car unless its well looke d after in this country rots.there are skylines and evo's rusting badly due to not taking the right care when they got here.
you will find a good one but as with all rs models you have to hunt and be prepared to look at shit first! theres plenty of good ones baout at that price or a bit more imo.its just finding one you like and not jumping on the first you see.

It seems that its only when you start taking bits of the car off that you start to see the extent of rust, i mean you couldnt go to buy someones car and start taking there side skirts off etc lol.........or could you??

if you buy with your eyes and not with your heart you wont go far wrong, if you paying that kinda money take your time looking around the car and get it up on a lift if the owner has nothing to hide there wont be a problem... loads of good quality cars out there dont just rush in and buy the first one you see...........

There are loads of rust free cars out there, infact really rusty cars are few and far between, No you wont be able to remove the side skirts, but any owner proud of his car will happily oblige if you pay to get it on a lift to check it out.
Dont be put off by the odd post that talks of rust, but equally don't assume the ones you go to see are rust free, I haven't heard of rusty floor pans being replaced, they aren't old xr3's

Good luck in your search and spend as much as you can, as MOST of the best cars demand good money

Hello Mate

I have a 1992 K plate so one of the first and before I had bought it it had never really been looked after. Hence it needed a full repaint. But when I took the body parts off to paint them I found no rust at all!

As with the previous comments there are a few rusty ones but in general I think they have survived quite well. If you can get it on a ramp and have a good look before you part with the hard cash then it is a good idea. I spent about half an hour under mine before I habded over the money!

Paul

Most Cossies leak oil, which luckily seems to make it's way across the bottom of the floor pan, keeping it mint underneath!!

Just stay away from the motorsport versions, enless you have a real passion for the car as they came as a bare shell and had no underseal or fook all on,so if you didnt do a good job underseal they rot like fook BUT i bought my motorsport cozy for £12500 and it needed 5 new panels ,but then it has got a few nice bits on and had 70k of reciepts and every bill from new just be very carefull if you can take someone thats owned a cozy for a few years by this time they will no all the ins and outs of cozy ownership ............andy

generally - the earlier ones (K,L reg) are less prone to rust then the latter (M, N reg) ones something to do with ford changing how they applied the underbody protection..?

i have a 93 L escos and took the side skirts of last winter and found no rust but mine had been garaged all its life so try and find one that has been garaged for most of its life and it shouldnt be to bad.

i love looking around scrap yards and the crap end that don't do salvage just
mot failures etc don't have many old escorts mk 5 anymore and there is a reason for that, they have mostly been scrapped already.
i love it when people expect a old car to be in the condition of a 3 year old one, they are out there but few and far between.
in the old days a escort (68-87) would do 7 winters and need welding some even sooner
if used regularly

Escos's don't seem to be as bad as most ford's of the era.
Jap cars deffo worry me thou as if they haven't been undersealed when they turn up in the UK it doesn't take long for the British weather to do its thang, my mate recently looked at R34 Skyline which was on the verge of needing welding!

thats nothing! look underneath a new ford mustang and you will be shocked. Not one bit of underseal whatsoever just a creamy coloured primer that the shell comes in.

If you are reffering to Gatecrashers thread and my comments about my sills, my car was driven onto a sand quarry every day by one of its previous owners so i learnt so i really wasnt shocked about what i found,The thing is with cars of this age you never know what theyve done or where theyve been. I think that if you are looking at paying that sort of money then get it onto a ramp with good access and take your time mate.

and take a mate who knows their stuff too!

i think you and gatecrasher have been unlucky martin.most arent like it.more the saffs as everyone see's them as cheap.where as an escort is a good chunk of money so looked after more.

Wow, thanks for all the replys, didnt expect this much of a response, this seems a really friendly forum

Well i actually feel alot better now than when i initially wrote the post...which is an excellent start

Im getting the impression that 15k wont buy the kind of car im looking for, not by the looks of some of the examples on the auto trader anyway lol

Just want a genuine straight car, im seeing quite a few these days are getting tarted up to bring them back something like a mint car, at the age of these cars im sure that its still possible to find a real beauty, as they are not that old really by todays standards..........well maybe a little bit old but not extreme

it is friendly in here bud.tbh its part of the reason i use this room alot and dont have an escort.
but also paul ripley from here has his own site dedicated to the escort cosworth which is very very friendly and most of us from here are there plus some others.take a look mate...
www.escortrscosworth.com
you will find loads of info there and feel free to ask all you like.

as for the price you are looking to spend.i have seen some lovely examples go at that sort of money tbh.so i still think there is one out there for you just look hard and check thoroughly.if you need any questions anwered ask us and im sure someone will know plus really do take a second pair of eyes who knows what they are looking for!they see what you cant sometimes(due to awe of wanting to buy what you like not what you know is good)

also you could give duncan at automotive unltd a call.he only deals in nice cosworths and some are just simply stunning!
let us know what you are looking at and someone may know the car.
