Default DIY clean up of CVH heads, tips people?

I'm doing a head swap on a couple of my engines, but was wondering what can I do to look it over and make sure its all 110%. What shall I look out for and what can I do to makesure it wont rattle?

fit a engine that ya know is working

fook trying to fix something thats worth 50 quid in a breakers

will cost ya that in bits and what if its fooked already

petrol will clean it up very well, but ideally need to be soaked in it over night, and u'll spend loads on it
