Default I want a VW!

Just been tempted by a nice looking black mk3 GTi.

It is a 2.0 8v, yes i know it wont set the road on fire before you say it but im getting bored and fancy a change after 2 years of owning this Escort.

Ive only seen pictures so far and it looks in good nick inside and out, what else should i look for and ask?

Im taking it for a spin tomorrow.

Rust as they are common for it just like escorts

Just all the usual things with any car really, let the car idle for fans to kick in check heater works etc etc

yeah i know, just not really in the know with VW's so wasnt sure if their prone for anything, but obviously its a VW so there cant be much to look for mechanically.
Here it is, i think it looks quite nice?

The splitter is in the boot he said because its catching over speed bumps.
Got a CAT 1 alarm with full closure which is nice

ive got a vr6 and fuel economy isnt the best tbh, that looks good, audi a3 steels on it, tbh they dont have a lot of rust like fords

id check the idle on the 2.0 8v as theyre a bit of a bugger for erratic idling, my mk2 had the 2.0 8v engine in and it was up down up down all the time, bit annoying!!!!!

i want mine like this....

So there audi a3 steels? i did wonder what they were yeah, looks good though, ive never been one for huge alloys since ive grown up abit, subtle is the way forward

my mate had one and the sills and door bottom had serious rust, it can be patched up but just note everything like thats wrong with it-drive away for a think and then go back. Don't love it from the minute you see otherwise you'll get it home then start noticing that bubble or knock.
But VW are good solid motors in general

Dubs all kool cars just check the electrics work, millage isn't a problem on them, check all the bushs and wheel bearings on the one your looking at because when you lower cars that much they can go very quick. My mate is selling a mint vr6 in silver Ł1400 but he's open to offers on it tho (essex)

this my vdub has ronal turbos on it now

I just got rid of a MK2 16v..... hated it!

Looked nice, but I was suprised that it was rustier, flimsier and more prone to breaking than any of my Fords!

Oh yeah, and it smelt bad

early mk3's - ones with square side repeaters - can be fairly rusty, sills, wheel archs, boot lids etc. later ones with the oval side repaters had galvanised steel i believe so less rust worries.

as said, check electrics work. vr6's are the ones to get but i'm a bit biased! and mpg on the 2.8 i get about 19mpg, thats around town doing only short journeys driving like a looney. on a decent run mid to late twenties is easily achievable even when into three figures.

The wheels are base model A3 alloys, just all painted up.

Look cool as fuck, just a bit small for a Mk3 golf really, better suited to a Lupo or similar.

Still deffo the most tasteful and individual Mk3 posted on this thread tho

Just FFS dont put Ronals on it Thats only 1 step up the "I have no imagination or taste of my own" ladder from a set of 8 inch wide MOs

i've got ronals on my polo and they really suit the car, when i got them no one had them but now there everywhere... but people who put ronal turbos on golfs really havn't got a clue about dubs!

My wife has a 16 valve mark 3 and although it's just about to reach 140k miles it's been a good car.

On the 96 onwards cars rust isn't such a problem. Hers has leather but I wouldn't say that the cloth ones wear much more. Having had that one nearly 2 years and a VR6 before it there isn't much I can say against them.

BillyCabrio that looks awesome that does, no shitty body mods just some nice wheels/lights etc, how it should be

By the way this one is a 96-P so it should be fine for rust then

this is what later ones have... no arches
