Quality of life and not worrying about finances everyday mate!

Cars are nice, but you can get a nice motor for 10k and sitback happily.

Add a bit to the 10k and get an E39 M5.
Personally, paying lumps off the mortgage makes more sense than poncing about in an expensive car.

Who gives a fcuk

My housemate and I both do the same job, same wages etc. We differ somewhat however;

He went out and bought a 350Z on finance, and owes about 20k on it. He's always skint, watching the pennies, not really being financially comfortable as a result.

I however, bought a 2ltr Mondeo for under a grand, kicked about for 18months, and put a few grand away in savings, cleared all my debts (bar student loan), and have never really worried about money, always had plenty available to me should anything unexpected pop-up or go away on holiday etc.

My housemate is percieved as the more affluent of us, but the truth is somewhat different Having done that for 18months and set myself up a bit, I have been able to buy a Scooby comfortably, again, not leaving me with cash worries.

Live comfortably! Have your toys, who cares what others think? They usually havent got fcuk all themselves anyway!

Well sensible get NA, I got an M3 so no turbo to boost, tune, etc!
Similar with M5, out the box it's got enough power, and good all rounder, so no need to get carried away with it.
My thinking anyways

Id have a nice car, not 40k's worth though, maybe just a nice 5 series BMW, Lexus, Merc, Audi etc... something nearly new, good spec and reliable.

Exactley.
Screw what other people think you should or shouldn't have. As said more important to be able to sleep at night & not worry about money than wonder if your Ł40K motor will still be on the drive / garage in the morning.

When do you stop adding to, Ł12k Ł15k Ł20k and then add to that?

5k is a bit, taking 10k to 15k, when he's talking of up to 40k.
Hardly stop the earth spinning considering.

you cant win mate, people will moan about you not having a real expensive car when youre earning so much, and others will moan about "thinks hes so great" driving round in an expensive car, even if you dont.

personally id put the expensive car out of my head, you can get a nice car for less than 10k, hell there arent many cars id like for more than that much anyway and like you say youd have money to do pretty much what you like, rather than worrying and being careful just cause you baught an expensive, non-essential motor.

You really have got the hump aint ya Some people clearly are lying about what they earned to make themselves feel better or look better or to make people who earn less look inferior. While I am sure this not the case for the majority, it is a case none the less.

I said to you that "when you earn more, you tend to spend more and some of the 50k+ earners are gurning about spending Ł20 a year on PF membership"

I agree with having a decent reliable car that is within your budget and which allows you to still have a decent life. I can probably just stretch to buying a Ferrari 360 but it would mean I would have to change my lifestyle to own this car so I dont believe its worth it.

On a flip slide to this discussion, what about people that are so mortgaged to the hilt they can not to have a holiday, go out or have no disposable income.

depends what you view as important....i've always had the cars i wanted, to an extent lol...but now i have just bought a house so decided to go a little easier on what i spend on the cars.

I enjoy having Sky TV, Internet, not worrying what my phone bill will come to, going out for meals, buying clothes etc etc.

Is it worth spending it all on a car and being miserable?? i don't think so.

Although when i think about it, i could sell the house, move back in with my dad and buy a nice 911 Turbo mortgages and house bills soon mount up!

ive just discovered the joys of running around in an old banger to save my project car. for Ł150 for a t+t car you dont have to worry about it breaking or crashing, just buy another.we have a new vw golf for the wife to ferry the kids about as they dont go in my cossie bmw.
depends if you want to look a flash fucker to prove to people that dont matter that you are doing as well as you say or whether you couldnt give a fuck what people think and do what you want with your money?

In regards to "but that wouldnt reflect my earnings.. which post people seem to think it should" - Fuck em, what do they matter anyway? No-one has to justify themselves to anyone!

In regard to buying a flash/nice/fast car - if you are away for 18mths/2yrs at a time, then whats the point? Have this expensive car sat there a) depreciating and b) making an ideal target for theft while you can't drive it!

If cars is your passion, then for sure spend on it - buy a decent car for what you need. Might be nice to have a Ł40k car sitting there looking flash, but if you can't drive it then why bother? Id' sooner have a Ł15-Ł20k car and Ł20-Ł25k sat in the bank than a Ł40k car and worrying about if all the bills will get paid....

Fuck, I ain't even got a car I'd sooner pay my bills everymonth and have some food to eat than spend out on running and insuring even a poxy 1.1 L reg Fiesta

I don't care about what people think....

I earn enough to keep me more than happy, and while all my collegues are buying 30k's worth of Audi or Scooby, I'm happy enough in my little MR2, or RST knowing that I'm not shelling out 500 quid a month on finance payments. I'd rather have spending money than debt to be honest.

Buy whatever u want. My m3 costs me an arm n a leg in finance costs, insurance, fuel (19,000 miles a year flat out to and from work). It means I can't buy other things however thats the way it is in life. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

I hate the idea of slaving away at this job that I don't like earning pretty well and not enjoying the drive home in the M3.

Lord knows I could do with selling the thing and clearing some debts, instead I just work harder and try and get the biggest annual bonus possible, clearing debts that way

Good luck and fuck whatever anyone else thinks

Cheers

Ł500 a month for three years and then the massive balloon payment or hand it back. They then normally end up with some more finance and/or another car instead of walking away learning a big lesson! People that do that are proper cunts IMO and need their head read - why do people feel the need to do it ? (I also can't get my head round why people would run themselves into huge debt over running a RS or any tuned up banger/trackday car for that matter!)

IMO the average punter spending more than Ł5K (I would never spend more than a Ł1K personally and I'm well above average!LOL) on there everyday car is just plain silly.

Don't get me wrong if your doing well and buying said car will not impact you or your families life then go for it as long as you can buy it outright there and then or your loan for it is 12months or less.

A car should be a means of transport until your life is sorted.
No point of a Ferrari & living in a shit house & neibourhood, the lack of people over 50 on this Forum proves that 99% of people get fed up with fast cars later in life, remember that.
Get you house, Family & future sorted before having a car as a luxury.
I went without fast cars for 8 years while I got my main priorities sorted after getting married.

Id definatly get a cheaper and less stress and hassle. You cant put a price on your health, and thats what the sacrifice would be if you blew it all on a flash car.
