shot peening will simply clean the surface up and remove any stressed material on the outer of the rods. the thing is you can get steel rods for the zetec from the states for very little outlay so why chance it with standard rods?

not sure off the top of my head but think pistons and rods are around Ł500 for a set. provided you don't incur import duty that is. some times worth waiting for the exchange rate to get better

only thing i do to them is get them balanced, used standard balanced rods on my on engine which has been in car now for 5+years,used same spec on all the other zvh lumps ive built, never had problem.

sean, I know you've said before you use them, Eagle rods. Thats your choice, I know many American builds use them too, it is however well known that they are "not all that"! Many more Americans shy away from them due to quality issues and in many's peoples opinion they are "just cheap shit".
Its proven that standard rods are good for 300+ bhp.
Considering the above and in answer to the thread title, the answer to juffer's question IMO its a no brainer.

i see your point but so many big power zetec use these rods over here and the states and take it from me they are far stronger then standard rods and for the money whats the point staying with standard rods...cheap but proven not to be shite.

Ok a simple question to everyone really.
Who has conclusive proof that a standard Zetec rod(used in a Zetec Turbo) has bent just because power exceded 300bhp?
I'm sure there isnt a huge pile of bent rods in existance (or non existance as the case may be) just because the power exceeded 300bhp or is there?
The compression ratio used in the build(which would have also played a part in determining where the point of failure was/is) would also be handy to know!!!
Cheers for your input

Ive just priced up CP pistons and Pauter rods for my 2 litre zetec turbo build ( silver top )... Ł640 quid without p&p...
I think i'll get these ordered for my build... cant go wrong for the money...
I used CP pistons and Pauter rods in my 2.35 build for my Scooby...

Cheers, they certainly make a very capable combination, running a lot more power than I initialy plan on running, would im sure be a walk in the park.
anodised makes a fair point about the st170 rods. If they are stronger in the first place & by using a custom piston the compression ratio can be lowered enough to significantly reduce cylinder preassure then im sure that would make a good reliable build. Anyone done it yet??

im about to start building a st170 turbo for my mk4
was thinking about keeping the st rods changing the pistons and using arp bolts
and using the st170 head with the vvt maybe a little port
