Default steering wheel/coloumn movement

hey guys,

bought myself a 89 s2 rst.

when you get up to speed of around 40 onwards the steering coloumn moves quite alot it sort of vibrates realy badly i have had a look and noticed some play in the coloumn up and down and also left to right.
is the coloumn supposed to be fixed in place with no movemnt or should there be some play in it ?
just thinking this may be my problem ?

jim..
