Default zetec and st170 pistons

Could i put the pistons and rods from a st170 in a pre 98 zetec block?

Yes.

The BE dimensions are the same on all Zetecs, as is the crank to top of the block.

There are however 4 major different rod length/piston compression height combinations.

1) 'Silvertop' engines
2) European 'Blacktop' engines
3) US 'Blacktop' engines
4) RS Focus engines

As long as you don't try to mix rods and pistons across these combinations its possible to swap complete sets (Performance Ford still haven't admitted they did that on their 'Blacktop' turbo engine).

Compression ratio may be slightly changed, but apart from the RS Focus, the changes in CR seen particularly between US/Euro engines, come from the combustion chamber volume in the heads.

Strangely, but maybe not, the forged piston/rods of the ST170 are of the US dimensions, as are most aftermarket ones. Well most do come from the US.
