Default hydraulic lifter (tappet) question on yb motor

i s there any visual way of finding out if tappets (hydraulic lifters) are fooked or ok apart from tell tale scoring etc ???
i have a few knackered ones in mine and want to find out which ones are goosed ,trouble is i have already removed them ready to fit new ones

the bit inside should this be hard to move or should it compress slightly when free of oil???

any help would be great car is a cosworth

i have fitted new ones anyway but id marked old ones up so i could inspect the valve gear of the knackered tappets just to make sure

not too worry as after half hour of fitting tappets it threw a rod lol
