Default Any pro/good go-karters here?

Ive been hooked into indoor karting lately and trying to become consistent at my local place. A few odd pro's are pushing consistent low 23 second laptimes and the odd mid-late 22's.

Ive tried me best and can push it to mid 23's here and there but thats only if am behind a top driver and chasing him or being chased by a pro-driver. If am on me own i cant seem to push it and stay consistent.

Ive been told to keep it smooth and no sudden movements on the steering wheel but is there any other tips as i'd like to stay consistent in the 23's or better 22's?

There twin engine karts and am around 10stones

Cheers

Im a half decent karter.. only ever done indoor karting but drove against some decent drivers who race rotax max and TKM regularly and ive beat em also held the lap record for a while there until it was removed because nobody was getting near it .. but we will see how good I am when I have my first drive in a 115cc TKM at Whilton Mill in april

which indoor track were you at??

Driving style on the twin stuff and indoor stuff tends to be very different from proper karts.

Nick its at Cannon (lol i i know dont ask) but couple of good guys that i know go there so they invite me aswell. I usually go to Full Throttle with me cousins and good mates as they don't really like the Cannons owner.

iirc i pushed a late 23 at Full Throttle but seem to find its way slippy and theres hardly any grip though Matt reckon'ed anything in the 23's is good

POPEYE & RichardPON what are proper karts then, do you mean the outdoor stuff? Ive been looking into the outdoor 2 stoke Karts but been told its a different game ball althogether & much harder than the indoor stuff.

Nick buddy do you know what type of karts they use at Birmingham Wheels as i never really found them all that the one time i went though it was in the wet and pouring down at the time?

Cheers

You need to speak with a man on hear user name (SCHOLES) he's quite good eg British karting champion a couple of years back! Now he's in the ford saloon car championship.

used to do a fair bit of karting myself - beat formula ford drivers, ex pro karters with ease.

as said above a good tip is keep it smooth you will be able to carry alot more speed and make sure you have a spot on line for the corner / corner after it. its all good an well going thru 1 corner good but if it then messes you up for the next 3 ....

Nobody seems to like the cannon owners.. the people who own full throttle used to co-own cannon and left because they said the guy was a complete cunt.

Late 23's aint bad considering the all the karts are all probably tweaked/welded and tired engines.. also the track has lost some grip.. was there doing a 2 hour endurance the other day.. only managed a 21.40 whereas in the past ive done consistant 20.70's and used to have the record of 20.25!

The karts they use are either single engine 250cc or twin engine 250cc

I used to race karts when I was wee down at the outdoor track in Larkhall. David Coulthard used to race at the same time, but he was a bit more advanced than me at the time and was in a different class. Wish I had kept it going as I was fairly good at it. But gave it in when I was about 14-15, to concentrate on school. Best thing is practice, that's all I can recommend. My dad used to take me down day after day round and round the track till I sould barely move my arms. Improvements come after time. I think you tend to find people are either good or they aren't, used to see people throw money at it, best karts, training etc, etc but just never had the ability. If you're finding you are a second off the pace on a relatively small circuit by the sounds of it then I'd suggest speaking to people and asking them to have a look at a few of your laps, to see where you're losing time.

Keep at it.

The Kart is only a small, piece of equipment. Short sharp movements can take momentum out of the kart, making it hard to maintain speed. Cornering is very important in a kart as this is where you tend to find a lot of the overtaking happens, either on the approach to the corner or coming out the other side. If your jerking the steering wheel all over the place, constantly correcting/changing your line you will lose momentum and as a result lose places. You want to be travelling round the corner having to adjust the steering as little as possible. Getting the wrong line may see you having to stand on the brakes and again lose momentum. Takes an age compared to everyone else around you to get back up to speed again.

It's basically the same as any other form of motorsport.

After reading this thread the other day I made a few phonecalls and I'm going down with a mate while he practices for a few shots in his kart when the weather dries up.

Cheers Mate

In a nutshell - the more you turn the wheel the slower you will go ...

At 10st and with a good driving style you should be quite competative on the indoor stuff

Back like 8 months later gosh time flies but just wanted to give a wee update....

Been at the indoor karts god knows how many times a month now and gotta admit every single person who said practice and practice was correct. Have defo improved and am banging in some quick lap times..

Have seem to learn and understand what racing lines are and trying to hit the perfect apex...

Also whats peeps meant by trying to be smooth

Only problem is am becoming annoyed as i seem to be getting stuck behind slow slow drivers but am working on it and gotta admit this sport is so damn addictive

Taking this month out due to fasting but cant wait till i get back
