Having been following the reports throughout the day here, it seems more and more to be accidental. However nothing is confirmed either way yet.
He was taking prescription sleeping tablets which have been known to cause problems here in Oz along with being ill.

To be fair to him though some early reports from that film are that he is incredible as the Joker, suppose we'll never know now though as genuine praise will be hard to come by.
