Default Building A Garage!!!

I'm wanting to build a garage at least the size to fit in 2 cars and have space for a work bench and stuff like that.I can get a car ramp at a very good price to go in it so what height will I have to go?
I've seen many pics of folks garages on here and wondered what size they are?
Please give me your comments and advice.

Get planning permission and building regs sorted first, based on my experience

I'm pretty sure you can put up a building that is no higher than 2metres and has a floor space of 30 square metres with no planning!!

Im an architect and would suggest a 6mx6m garage usually is enough for most. for additional workshop space its worth adding a meter to the end of it. Of course it al depends on what you can fit and what the council may allow you under the local planning guidelines. Some may not allow you to just replace the existing, they may have requirements for materials to use etc. What are you thinking of useing, steel sheeting or brick. Check with your local council body before you start anything as they will make you pull it down if it does not comply with their rules.
just ask if you have any further questions regarding process etc.

Cheers jpblue.
My plan was to use concrete sheets on 3 side and have a brick finish on the front.I'm wanting a workshop type garage really as I live on a farm.I don't seem to get any hassle building on a farm thankfully.

I wish we could all build on farms, my life would be so much easier without the councils and their planning regulations. Good luck, but remember to insulate the walls and ceiling/roof or it will be too cold to work in over winter.
Cheers.

Minimum ceiling height wants to be 4m if you are having a 2 post lift for a regular car and 4.5m for a 4x4 etc. One option is to have a 1m to 1.5m pit running between the legs of the 2 poster so you can get away with a lower ceiling height
I also recommend using self levelling Agilia concrete to cast your base. It costs a bit more but its the bollocks

Good idea about pit.I actually need to raise the garage up by about 1.5m so that would be perfect.
