series 2 gearbox into a mk3 escort
Can it be done? Been offered a CTS stage 2 from a series 2 and want to fit it in my series 1

think you need the housing of a mk3 box.

Can anyone tell me for sure? I was lead to believe that you could fit a mk4 box into a mk3 bUt not the other way around.

as above pretty sure the internals will fit into a mk3 box

MK4 into MK3 doesn't go
Doesn't have the front bolt mounting, sure the casing can be swapped but no idea how involved this is...
Basically a MK4 will accept any BC or Ib5 box from a MK3,4,5
But you can only put a MK4 box into a MK4 Escort
