not a nice way to hide a leak if your selling a car, could have caught fire.

seals go all the time its just one of them things but obviously knowing about it then selling it is a bit tight

cant be that big of an oil leak, the sponge still looks pretty clean.

have you tried removing the sponge and checking for evidence of the said oil leak before you start point a blame at a trader.
just that it could have been over sighted, or maybe even left like that from when the trader took ownership of the car

if all said and done and the trader is to blame and its someone from on here then yes its a bit moody and maybe a name and shame may be req'd. but look into it a bit more first mate.

just my opinion

what is there to leak though.

the sump return pipe or the sump is leaking in that area.

quite possible the trader did not know.

I've looked at 7 Escort Cosworths in the last 2 months and this is the kind of tricks I've come across recently. Unfortunately this comes down to your own viligance when viewing a used car from a private seller.
But...some of us less mechanically minded or someone looking for that extra piece of mind will happily pay a higher price to buy from a trader with the reassurance and understanding they have been thoroughly checked over and given the green light.
Please for all our sakes name and shame this rogue trader as in my opinion this shouldn't have been sold like this and its not excuse that "maybe the trader didn't see it" It should have been found and repaired.
My 2 pence!

disagree totally, the car could now be 14 years old FFS, any 14 year old car could and in 99% of cases will have faults it's not a new or 6 month old car, traders arn't obliged to check every square inch of the car prior to sale, for example you show me an escort cosworth without a leak somewhere no matter who small?

the trader could genuinely have not seen this, looks like they would have had to get under the car to see it anyway!

Yes but the Escort Cosworth is no Ł500 14 year old car.
Escort Cosworths are selling for the same money as a new Focus ST.
I expect if a trader is willing to sell a 14 year old car for the kind of money they can fetch and this is whether it is an Escort Cosworth, 40 year Lotus Cortina or 40 year old RS1800.
Incidently "ice" did you pay Ł500 for your Escort?

i believe 99% of all esc cos have(or have had) a small oil leak on them...(usually in the transmission)....nothing shocking there really.
I think some people think just because the esc cos was Fords flagship motor that it wouldn't leak like most standard Fords

Don’t think that the leak is the problem fella, i would be more pissed off at the bodge job of "fixing" or hiding the leak. Myself i wouldn’t accept this off a trader who specialises in cosworths. The whole point of going to a specialist is to avoid this sort of thing (well that's my opinion)

Exactly, I admit the Cosworth range do have there problem area's but my point is covering the problem and if the dealer didn't notice it the I way see it is the dealer is at fault for being incompetent.
Please name and shame this dealer so that we can all be aware of yet another rogue motor dealer.

Maybe the sponge was put there to try and trace a leak and they forgot about it? Who knows, it does sound bad at first but there could be many genuine explanations for it. I cant see a specialist trader sticking that in there to try and hide the problem surely? As i said maybe to try and find the leak yes but not to try and hide it from buyers. Especially a trader from on here as its bound to get back on here anyway, so i cant see them risking their reputation for the same of an oil leak that 95% of them have anyway.

As said, the trader doesnt HAVE to check every inch of the car, but you would expect them to see that in fairness.

If it has taken you this long to find then maybe the person before you didnt have enough time checking around the car for it.

Dont always jump down the throat of someone because of a problem there is many ways and causes how it could have got there.

Chill out, speak to the last person who had it maybe their might be a simple explanation.

where have i jumped down anyones throat ?
i only posted this to make the point to anybody thinking of buying a escos . i dont expect it to be 100% no faults, but for Ł 14000 i would have expected a trader to at least check it over. but having said that buyer beware. i am in the position where i can do anywork myself . others my not . only trying to help. also i have not hidden behind a keyboard to post this trader is aware .

in all honesty, do you really think the trader would put a bright yellow sponge in there just to stop a leak, oil, water etc...and then sell it with it still in.

and people are going on about the trader checking the car over etc...did you not check the car over before you bought it.

and if you did check it over....why did you not find it then.......

seems to me it would be hard to see and thats why the trader did not see it.

just because you are stripping the car down you spotted it.

from to 2 or 3 traders that i think MAY have sold you this car,i can't see them selling a car knowing that it had a sponge placed in a certain area to hide a fault...those traders seem 100% genuine I.M.O(and from feedback this site)....What seems to have been a genuine mistake has been turned into a traders witch hunt on this thread to me

Also if you don't want to buy a car for 14k+ that leaks oil from time to time...you better buy a beemer or something german
